Microsoft Research Launches Code Hunt Game to Teach Programming

Microsoft Research Launches Code Hunt Game to Teach Programming | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Microsoft Research today launched Code Hunt, a browser-based game for anyone interested in learning how to code by playing. The premise is straightforward:

Learning to code can be made more effective and sustainable if it is perceived as fun by the learner. Code Hunt uses puzzles that players have to explore by means of clues presented as test cases. Players iteratively modify their code to match the functional behaviour of secret solutions.

Up to 37% of Enterprise Computers Vulnerable to Microsoft Office Zero-day

Up to 37% of Enterprise Computers Vulnerable to Microsoft Office Zero-day | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Our initial research of the exploit indicates that this vulnerability is capable of affecting Microsoft Office versions 2003, 2007, and 2010 (Office 2010 vulnerability is limited to Windows XP and Server 2003 operating systems) and that it will fail on machines viewing the documents in protected mode (ActiveX support in documents disabled). While it is not easy to determine if computers have ActiveX enabled for Office documents, it is possible to profile vulnerable combinations of Microsoft Windows and Office to help understand the attack surface.

Our telemetry feeds indicate the following breakdown of Microsoft Office versions deployed in enterprise environments:

- Office 2003 - 5%

- Office 2007 - 30%

- Office 2010 - 41%

- Office 2013 - 14%

Beyond practicing due diligence in opening any attachments arriving by email, it is recommended that all users of the affected Office versions install Microsoft Fix it 51004. Websense will continue to monitor any developments related to the use of this vulnerability in future attacks.

Know your enemy - protect yourself - Microsoft Malware Protection Center

Know your enemy - protect yourself - Microsoft Malware Protection Center | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Of the many weapons and tricks in an attacker’s arsenal, none is more dangerous or insidious than the ability to hide and continuously compromise a system from within.

This is the role of a rootkit. Malware uses rootkits, or rootkit functionality, in order to hide their presence on an affected computer and thus impede their removal.

===> Once compromised by a rootkit, any information returned by an affected system can no longer be trusted and must be regarded as suspect (which is exactly how they hide themselves and their components from you - by modifying requests for information that might give them away). <===

===> Know your enemy and protect yourself by learning about these threats. <===

Critical Security Fixes from Adobe, Microsoft

Critical Security Fixes from Adobe, Microsoft | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Adobe and Microsoft each issued security updates today to fix critical vulnerabilities in their software. Adobe’s fixes include a patch for a Flash Player flaw that is actively being exploited to break into Windows computers. Microsoft’s Patch Tuesday release includes nine patch bundles — more than half of them rated critical — addressing at least 27 security holes in Windows and related software.

Nevertheless, the underlying vulnerability being targeted exists in Windows, Mac and Linux versions of the software. Windows and Mac users can grab the latest version (v. 11.3.300.271) via the Flash Player download center.

Be sure to uncheck the “free” software scans that Adobe loves to bundle with updates, such as McAfee‘s obnoxious Security Scan Plus, if you don’t want it. Linux users should update to v. 11.2.202.238, and Chrome users want to be at v. 11.3.330.270 (normally Chrome auto-updates Flash, but recently it’s been sluggish to do so: my Chrome installation is still at v. 11.3.31.225. I will update this post in a bit with the direct links to the Flash Player downloads.

Read more, a MUST for any "OS":

Anthony Salcito, Vice President for Microsoft Education shares insights into eductation news, trends, and highlights from around the world.

Anthony Salcito 14 Jun 2012 8:00 AM

Early in my career at Microsoft, I was inspired to see how accessible technology empowered and enriched the lives of individuals with disabilities and enabled new opportunities to learn and communicate.

These experiences fueled my passion to ensure that all students have the right technology in place to help them learn. Educators understand the importance of supporting students with special needs, yet the process of selecting and using accessible technology can be complex.

Keeping technology safe for our most vulnerable users - Microsoft UK Schools blog

The Microsoft UK Blog for schools, featuring news for schools from Microsoft, case studies within education, and education ICT advice

In fact, a recent study from Fordham University shows that schools are struggling to meet even existing legal and regulatory requirements related to the protection of student data.

Additionally, a recent survey of parents conducted by Benenson Strategy Group on behalf ofCommon Sense Media found that 90 percent of respondents were “concerned about how private companies with non-educational interests are able to access and use students’ personal information” and 77 percent support making it “illegal for schools and education technology companies to sell students’ private information to advertisers.”

So, as we gather together this week, we must ask: How do we protect the most vulnerable among us – our children – and guarantee their privacy and security in the ever-changing world of education today?

Interestingly, this articel does highlight the mportance of technological skills but emphasizes that 'soft skills' like communication  are equally important to hireability. It is important that students do not base their education on a technological knowledge that may not neccecarily guarentee them a job in the future. The education system needs to be integrated between soft and hard skills that teach students how to interact successfully with technology AND people.

Tackling cybersecurity together > Microsoft Europe

Tackling cybersecurity together > Microsoft Europe | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Where Europe succeeds, we succeed

Europe matters to us. For the past thirty years, it’s been our aim to help fuel the European economy...

The Web has prompted tremendous growth and innovation over the last two decades, but also a new set of challenges.

Cybersecurity has emerged as a significant global threat. Every day more than a million people are successfully targeted by cyber criminals.

===> That’s a new victim every 14 seconds. <===

Malicious attacks are mushrooming and conservative estimates put the annual cost of cybercrime at $114 billion. Given this, it’s hardly surprising that the World Economic Forum’s Risk Response Network recently elevated cybersecurity to a top five global risk, alongside issues such as income inequality, rising greenhouse gas emissions and fiscal imbalances.

Gust MEES: in the word ICT = "I", meaning "Information", so this is necessary in Education especially! IT-Security in 21st Century is a need to get included in curriculum, it's the responsibility of Education to teach IT-Security and Internet-Safety...

By knowing that every 14 seconds there is a new victim to cybercriminals I hope that educators and teachers will see the importance of preparing best their learners to be best protected, even if they need to learn themselves about it, we are ALL "Life Long Learners" ;)
