Have you Drilled the “3Ws” Into Your Kids’ Heads?

Have you Drilled the “3Ws” Into Your Kids’ Heads? | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Never post online (either by words or photos):

Whom you are with.Where you are (or are going). What time you will arrive.

If you feel like you are being repetitive in teaching your child these rules, treat that that “nagging” feeling as a good sign. It means you care and understand the weight of safety online and your child will be safer for it.

Great Tips: Label Books with Your Child’s Name

Great Tips: Label Books with Your Child’s Name | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Try something new with your kids every day! Find tips on reading, learning, and raising a well-rounded child.

Make a point of writing your child’s name in the books that are hers to keep, in simple block letters. In part, this helps her begin to recognize the symbols that she’ll eventually learn as the unique sequence of letters that make up her name.

===> And it’ll make her (his) “library” feel that much more special and precious, something to build and save. <===

Back to School Online Safety Guide : Yoursphere for Parents

Back to School Online Safety Guide : Yoursphere for Parents | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

The back-to-school season is responsible for billions of dollars spent on digital devices; laptops, tablets and smartphones are changing the way our children learn, and subsequently, the way they interact with the world around them. Unfortunately, many children fall victim to the negative aspects of technology: cyberbullying, sexting and online predation. While certainly all children won’t encounter these issues, it certainly doesn’t mean they don’t exist, and it isn’t an excuse for you not to be aware. In today’s digitally connected world, one of the best things we can offer our child is our parental, involvement, education and vigilance. While you certainly don’t have to stay ahead of your kids when it comes to knowing about the coolest photo app, it is critically important that you know when they start using it; you have a safety plan in place, and you know what to talk to your kids about as well as have insured that all their digital devices are safety enabled.

Gust MEES: don't forget that Internetsafety alone isn't enough! You need also to protect the computer and other devices of "Bring Your Own Device" (BYOD), check my FREE courses here:

Why parents should educate their kids about tech

Why parents should educate their kids about tech | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

"For parents trying to raise kids and give them the technology to be successful, yet also protect them, there's a sense that no one's there to tell folks what steps to take," said Marian Merritt, Internet safety advocate at Symantec.

But laying the responsibility for teaching digital citizenship solely at families' feet would be a mistake, Warren said. "It also has to be a part of ongoing education," she added, noting that kids as young as 2 now commonly use smartphones and other technological devices.

"I hope schools are distributing information and educating (families), ===> but ultimately, parents have a huge role to play (in the process)." <===

Two Faces of Perfectionism | Psychology Today

Two Faces of Perfectionism | Psychology Today | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

On the surface, striving for perfection in the things we do is a good thing. It helps us plan, organize, strategize and achievegoals. But there is a flip side to perfectionism that can harm children and teens as they journey through their school years.

How should parents and educators help kids understand their perfectionist tendencies so that doing their best doesn’t drag them down?

The Teenage Brain: How Do We Measure Maturity? - Association for Psychological Science

The Teenage Brain: How Do We Measure Maturity? - Association for Psychological Science | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Bonnie and Scott do make some suggestions. Consider teenage drinking, for example, which is a form of sensation seeking and risk taking. It’s been argued that 18-year-olds should be permitted to drink, since they are considered old enough to go to war and assume other adult responsibilities.

But the teenage brain is vulnerable to the effects of alcohol, and research has shown that the age at which teens start drinking—and the intensity of this drinking—are strong predictors of alcohol abuse and addiction later in life. These scientific insights argue for maintaining the 21-year-old drinking age,

Bonnie and Scott say, and for intensifying efforts to keep teens from taking up drinking at all.

Critical Thinking: Ways to Improve Your Child’s Mind

Critical Thinking: Ways to Improve Your Child’s Mind | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
by Marilyn Price-Mitchell, Ph.D. This article explores critical thinking in elementary school children and offers guidance to parents that helps keep young minds active during the summer months and all year long.
Gust MEES's insight:

To be good at thinking, children must believe that thinking is fun and want to be good at it. Parents can make thinking fun throughout the academic year as well as during the summer and on vacations. Good thinkers practice thinking just like they practice basketball or soccer.

You can talk about these ways of thinking with your children by watching this video together. Afterwards, have a discussion about how they can practice being like Fair-Minded Fran.

A Letter To Parents Of Digital Age Children

A Letter To Parents Of Digital Age Children | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
A Letter To Parents Of Digital Age Children

Helping children learn how to navigate their way in the digital world is a complicated business. Those of us in education need parents like you to be involved as active and open learners about the digital world, learners who can engage with us, their children and their children’s teachers, in much-needed conversations about digital matters.

We need parents to act as important models and supports in their childrens’ explorations online. We need, parents and schools alike, to get past the fear that holds us back from connecting with young people when they need us most. Only then can we help them travel far and learn from the journey once they cross the street to encounter the world.

Gust MEES's insight:

1. Teach your children how to cross the digital street!

Parent Guide to Internet Safety | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Dear Parent:

Our children are our nation's most valuable asset. They represent the bright future of our country and hold our hopes for a better nation. Our children are also the most vulnerable members of society. Protecting our children against the fear of crime and from becoming victims of crime must be a national priority.

Unfortunately the same advances in computer and telecommunication technology that allow our children to reach out to new sources of knowledge and cultural experiences are also leaving them vulnerable to exploitation and harm by computer-sex offenders.
