Android malware spies on you even after phone is shut down | Mobile Security | CyberSecurity | Apps and Widgets for any use, mostly for education and FREE | Scoop.it
A particularly devious new Android malware can make calls or take photos even if you shut the device down, according to security research firm AVG.

To achieve this, the malware hijacks the shutting down process — making it appear as though your Android device is shutting down. You see the animation, the screen goes black, but the phone is actually still on.

Improved Simplocker variant hits Android users hard | Mobile Security | CyberSecurity | Apps

Improved Simplocker variant hits Android users hard | Mobile Security | CyberSecurity | Apps | Apps and Widgets for any use, mostly for education and FREE | Scoop.it
The initial version used a unique encryption key for all victims, which allowed Avast to create a free removal tool for the unfortunate victims to use.

But that ship has now sailed, as Simplocker developers have upped the ante and the latest variant of the malware now encrypts files with a different key on each device.

According to Nikolaos Chrysaidos, Avast Android malware and security analyst, this new variant has already infected more than 5,000 unique users. They have been tricked into installing the malware by malicious ads on shady sites, as it poses as a Flash Player app.

Don't you just love mobile apps? So do malicious code writers | Apps and Widgets for any use, mostly for education and FREE | Scoop.it
There are some surprising numbers available that tell a dark story about mobile apps and what they can be doing on your device.

By now you've read about malicious apps that leak privacy data, but do you realize how serious it really is? If not, you'd better pay attention to the following statistics gathered by Symantec*. And if you think that Google Play is 100% safe, it isn't. I have some data that yields some shocking results about the number of malicious apps waiting to grab your data.

“While these apps make our lives easier, they also give a wider group of application developers and advertising networks the ability to collect information about our activities and leverage the functionality of our devices.

According to Hoffman, more concerning is that many apps collect information or require permissions unnecessary for the described functionality of the app. He says this is not the first time this issue has surfaced, with reports of popular apps collecting irrelevant information or transmitting data when devices are turned off leading to significant backlash.

Have you ever received a blank call, and no one was on the other side of the line? What about a similar blank SMS received through your mobile carrier’s Mail2SMS gateway? There’s a high probability that it was a mobile spammer who’s automatically and efficiently verifying the validity of a recently harvested database of mobile numbers, with QA (Quality Assurance) in mind.

These verified databases will be later on used as the foundation for a highly successfulspam/scam/malicious software disseminating campaigns, thanks to the fact that the cybercriminals behind them will no longer be shooting into the dark. How do they do that? What kind of tools do they use?
