The Statistics Institute of Belize has released the trade numbers from last year. There are some interesting numbers on there.
"As expected, there were significant changes in the importation of several goods in 2013. On the one hand, spending on freight vehicles, earth moving machinery, jewellry and building cement were up. On the other hand, there were less expenditures on fertilizers, milks and creams, and telecommunication equipment. Imports from the US amounted to a record $597.3 million dollars, reclaiming the 32 percent share they held two years ago. Purchases of goods from Mexico and CARICOM were also at their highest level ever. Imports from Panama and China, however, fell for a second consecutive year, due directly to a decrease in free zone purchases."

For the first time, Belize has made the quarterfinals at the Miss World competition. Congratulations, Chantae Guy!
"The excitement was palpable as Graeme took to the floor to brief the contestants on what was expected of them. He - alongside three other representatives of the brand - would be judging them so the representatives were keen to catch every word. He started by saying how magnificent they all looked and how he wished every single one of them could be in the show! To be selected, he asked them to tell him a catwalk story with their walk and clarified that he was looking for someone to suit his brand, and who could interpret the clothes in their own way. He finished by instructing them to ‘become actresses’ and ‘walk casually’, as though they were on a street and not in front of thousands of people! Having wished them all luck, he headed for the judges table and the audition began in earnest."

Tilapia farming is working well in Central Farm. They had a successful workshop on the subject which had more than 40 attendees.
"The Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan) is pleased to announce that Tilapia production has become a hot topic after the Aquaculture project was started. Since the entry barrier of tilapia farming is less than other aquaculture issue, with the assistance from the Aquaculture Project, which is a cooperated project between the Government of Belize and Government of Taiwan, there are more than 100 producers who have ventured into having their own tilapia farm and have received good revenues."

Taiwan has another great student group visiting Belize. They are here longer this year, and have projects planned around Cayo, including San Antonio. They have a great lineup of community service projects planned. Thanks, NTHU! "Each year, through the sponsorship of the Government of the Republic of China (Taiwan), approximately two hundred volunteer groups from various universities in Taiwan are sent abroad to assist communities in public and private sector initiatives. On Sunday, for the fourth year consecutively, a group of twelve students from the National Tsing Hua University in Taiwan arrived in Belize. Bringing with them twenty-six desktop computers, eleven notebooks and various school bags and stationery, the group will spend the next thirty-five days volunteering in rural Cayo District. The students, all have training in various subject areas and will be providing IT courses and partaking in cultural exchanges. Today, the Taiwanese volunteers were officially welcomed by newly installed Ambassador, Benjamin Ho at the Embassy in Belize City."
