Congratulations to the Benque Marching Band(picture is from their practice video) for winning 1st place at Band Fest.  Band Fest was yesterday in Corozal, and Cayo really cleaned up.  The SISE Dreams took 3rd place in the marching band category.  The Belmopan Active Youths took 1st place for Drum Corps.  

"At the end of the event, St. Luke “Purple Spirit” marching band won the Drumline competition.  In the Drum Corps category, the champion is the Belmopan Active Youth group.  They took home $4,000 and a trophy.  Second place was won by the Holy Redeemer Marching band.  Coming in third was the St. Luke marching band.  In the Marching Band with Wind Instrumet category, Benque Viejo Marching Band walked away with first prize, taking home $6,000, a tropy and medals.  Second place in this category was won by the Corozal Community College marching band while the San Ignacio/Santa Elena Dreams Marching Band captured third prize."

The Belmopan Bandits travelled to Corozal to play the Corozal Heats.  They didn't win, but the Bandits are 2 and 2 and are ranked in 3rd place.

The Cayo Welcome Center came alive Friday night, when a jazz orchestra from Devon, Canada filled the stage, and played some classics for a few hours.  The orchestra was great, everyone had a fun time, and there was even some dancing going on.  The group has been in Corozal setting up a jazz program.  After the music, a couple of fire spinners from Portugal wowed the crowd by playing with fire.  Thanks, Rotary, for making this happen.

'25 things we all know about Belize' might have been a better title.  There's some cool Cayo information in this article from the Huffington Post.  The picture of the sleeping policeman in Cristo Rey leads the story.

"They still have hand-cranked ferries: One in the Cayo District, used to reach Xunantunich, and another Corozal to reach the Cerros site, these ferries are a flash back into the old Belize...  The tallest building is a Maya pyramid: The Caana temple at the Maya site of Caracol, rises 136 feet high."

Congratulations to the UB Lady Black Jaguars for their three-peat win at the ATLIB National Football finals!  They travelled up to Corozal, and won the tournament with an 8 - 0 shutout. 

"For the third consecutive year, our Lady Black Jaguars have retained the championship at the ATLIB National Football Tournament.  After qualifying to the nationals in the regional tournament, our female team made their way to Santa Clara village, Corozal District on March 21, 2015 to face the hosting school: Centro Escolar Mexico Junior College (CEMJC).  Our team was able to subdue CEMJC with a resounding victory of 8-0 with goals from Delmi Cornelio, Delmi Hernandez, Rosaria Cal, Esther Cal, Albertha Garcia, Tiffany Gonzalez, Emmerlyn Nunez and Daniela Vargas."

The Western Ballaz host the Corozal Heat tomorrow night, Saturday, April 12th, at 8:00pm.  The last time they played, in Corozal, the Ballaz beat them 78 - 76.  The expo game this time will be the SHC second string team against a Benque junior selection.  There will be lots of prizes, food, and drinks, and this time, there will be a $25 free throw contest too.  Meluchi's will host the after party.

"Game again this Saturday against Corozal Heat at SHC.  This game will start at 8:00 p.m.  Thanks for supporting your WB boys!!"

The road trip to Corozal to see the Cayo Western Ballaz triumph over the Corozal Heat was a lot of fun.  The final score was 78 to 76.  They'll be hosting the Dangriga Warriors here in Cayo, at the SHC auditorium, on the 22nd.

The Western Ballaz just played an exposition game against the Galen Eagles at the Sacred Heart College auditorium.  It was a great game, and the Ballaz had 19 unanswered points in the first half.  Galen was able to rally in the second half, and they won 71-60. The Western Ballaz will travel to Corozal to play against the Corozal Heat on Saturday. 

You can now purchase Western Ballaz t-shirts for only $15.  They are available in all sizes, even kid's sizes.

"The Galen Eagles came out to play the Western Ballaz tonight.  While the Ballaz had a 19 point streak in the first half, they had an unlucky spell with 3 point shots(0 for 30), and lost, with the final score of 60 to 71.  They'll be ready for their first game of the season this Saturday at Corozal."

Metal Haven concert tickets go on sale this week.  Ascenthium, No Te Creo, Emendo, Lisergia, and As Moonlight Falls will be rocking Benque on November 2nd.

Feelgood news of the day.  26 Belizean youths went to El Salvador to attend a youth conference that focused on contributing to the community.

"Twenty-six Belizean Youth Attend Conference in El Salvador to Learn to Contribute to Their Community.  Youth from six communities in Belize travelled to El Salvador over this past weekend (2 - 5 August) to attend a Bahá’í Youth Conference.  They returned Monday night full of excitement to execute the plans they made for themselves to serve their communities of Corozal, Belmopan, Belize City, San Pedro, San Ignacio, and Dangriga.  This Conference was attended by 660 youth ages 15 to 30 from Belize, Cuba, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and El Salvador.  It was one of 114 similar Regional Conferences being held from July through October around the globe on all continents and many island groups.  The purpose of these gatherings is 'to summon today's youth' of all faiths and backgrounds 'to put the needs of others before their own' in order 'to aid the spiritual and social development of those around them, especially ones younger than themselves.'"

A big congratulations to the University of Belize's Lady Black Jaguars for winning the ATLIB football championship!  They traveled to the Corozal district to play at Escuela Mexico on Sunday, and they brought back the 1st place trophy.

"UB Lady Black Jaguars are the new ATLIB Football Champions after defeating Belize Adventist Junior College (BAJC), and Independence Junior College (IJC) on Sunday, April 14, 2013.  The first game was against BAJC which ended in a 1-1 tie during regular time which meant the victory was going to be decided at the penalty shots.  UB’s able goal keeper Idania Ramirez, stopped three penalties, and UB classified to the championship game.  In the final game of the day UB scored the only goal of the game, Rosaria Cal was the striker of that decisive goal."
