"Super proud of the Belize Macaws (national rugby 7s team), who took third place in the Central American Rugby 7s tournament held in San Salvador last Saturday. They took on the Central American Champions in their first overseas encounter, and eventually walked away with two wins out of four games against other Guatemalan and El Salvadoran national 7s teams. Pictured here is the team with Belizean Ambassador to El Salvador, Margaret Juan) and Captain Raheem Cummings presenting pendant Belize flags to the Catpains of the other teams - we were the only ones to do this. Our guys also presented small gifts to all the officials - again, only we. So, they put Belize on the Central American map and I am SUPER SUPER PROUD!"

Did you know that Xunantunich gets visited by 46,000 people a year?  Xunantunich is the subject of this archaeological article from the Seattle Times.  And yes, El Castillo is a sight to see, and to see from.

"Although many people think Mayan culture was restricted to what is now Mexico, the grand kingdoms of the first millennium spread throughout what is now Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras.  Xunantunich just became a tourist attraction in the early 1990s as excavations progressed and tourism infrastructure was added.  Today it draws about 46,000 visitors a year."

Chaa Creek Unveils 2012 Maya Stelae

Chaa Creek Unveils 2012 Maya Stelae | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Joe Awe introduced Chaa Creek's 2012 Maya Stelae in this video.

"As anthropologist Joe Awe explained to the guests who attended the unveiling ceremony held at Chaa Creek, the ancient Maya used the carved stone monuments to record important dates and events in their various city-states spread across the vast Maya empire, which covered all of Belize and parts of Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador.  'It is very fortunate for us that the Maya used the stelae to carve important information into stone for future generations to see.  Otherwise, since the Spanish Conquistadors destroyed the Maya’s huge libraries, artwork and books, we’d have hardly any information at all to piece together their rich history,' he said."

Excavating Maya Ruins in the Jungle

Excavating Maya Ruins in the Jungle | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Some Sunday humor.  The title alone makes this archaeological entry worth reading.

"So why am I here with archaeologists daring the snakes of Belize?  Why did I help excavate human remains this year from ruins, and hang from vines, roots and branches off the side of a giant stone pyramid last year?  We're hunting clues to a longstanding mystery - the collapse of the ancient Maya empire.  The ancient Maya civilization encompassed an area twice the size of Germany, occupying what is now southern Mexico and northern Central America, including Belize, Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras.  At the height of the Maya empire, known as the Classic period, which stretched from roughly 250 AD to at least 900 AD, perhaps as many as 25 million people lived there, achieving a population density greater than that of medieval Europe.  For uncertain reasons, the ancient Maya civilization apparently collapsed more than a thousand years ago, with its population declining catastrophically to a fraction of its former size. Researchers want to find out why."
