The National Climate Change Office teamed up with the Environmental Research Institute to make a video talking about the forests of Belize, and how they are a vital part of the biome we live in.   "REDD+ is a long term forest based initiative that seeks to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and increase carbon sequestration from Belize’s forest. Reducing Emission from Deforestation and forest Degradation, + conservation, sustainable management of forests and carbon stock enhancement."

The University of Belize has launched their new INsights e-magazine. In this first issue, they highlight UB's Environmental Research Institute, which is in its 5th year, and the tablet distribution. "There are many good things happening at UB – but very few people get the opportunity to hear about them. INsights is a bi-monthly e-magazine. Its content will showcase the positive things happening at the university in an effort to change the image of UB." In related news, the ladies won the UB ralathon for the 4th year in a row.

Scholarships are available for the upcoming Plant Taxonomy Course that will be taking place in January. The course will be happening at the Belize Botanic Gardens, Mountain Pine Ridge, and La Milpa. The application deadline is December 12th.
"The Environmental Research Institute is pleased to announce the availability of two scholarships for UB students or professional from partner organizations to participate in a field course on plant taxonomy that the Royal Botanical Garden Edinburgh organizes in Belize every year... As part of the course students will learn plant identification and collection methods as well as ecological sampling techniques.

Great news about the University of Belize's Environmentsl Research Institute partnering with the Protected Areas Conservation Trust.
"PACT has partnered with ERI via a Medium-Sized Grant of $200,000 to assist in carrying out the project 'National Training Programme for Protected Areas Management in Belize.' The National Training Programme was developed by ERI as part of a larger project entitled 'Strengthening National Capacities for the Operationalization, Consolidation and Sustainability of Belize’s Protected Areas System' which is being implemented by the National Protected Areas Secretariat (NPAS) of the Ministry of Forestry, Fisheries, and Sustainable Development. The main goal of the National Training Programme is to develop national capacity for protected areas management to enhance and sustain management of the National Protected Areas System. The Programme will also serve to institutionalize training and capacity building for protected areas managers in a holistic approach (first holistic training programme available to protected areas managers in Belize) instead of the piece-meal approach commonly utilized in Belize."

Friends for Conservation and Development are looking for student volunteers to help monitor Scarlet Macaws in the Chiquibul. You'd get to stay at their base for a week, monitor Scarlet Macaws, hike the Chiquibul, play in the Macal river, and have a great time doing it all.
The Environmental Research Institute has posted about it on their FB page.
"The Chalillo reservoir in the Chiquibul forest is a majestic area due to the occurrence of scarlet macaws that not only gives a colorful sight to the forest but also makes it a magical area to put conservation efforts in place. I take this opportunity to write you in seeking potential students that may be interested in helping us monitor the new hatchlings in the area. Our team have identified areas where scarlet macaws have hatched and the aim is now to put a presence in the area on a daily basis."

Oceana Belize had their 2016 Reef Week, and had events all over the country, including an expo at their Belmopan campus. UB's Environmental Research Institute got some great pictures of the main event. Oceana also captured many of the moments of Reef Week.
