Panama's 10th Birthday Celebration

Panama's 10th Birthday Celebration | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

The Belize Zoo is celebrating Panama's 10th birthday tomorrow, starting at 10:30am.  As part of the festivities they'll have an unveiling ceremony for an exquisite feather art display, with special guests Peter Hughes, Belize’s British High Commissioner, and Ornithologist Jonathan Urbina.  Happy Birthday, Panama!

"Another year has almost gone by and on November 15th The Belize Zoo’s Ambassador Harpy Eagle, Panama, will be celebrating his 10th birthday.  This will be a grand event with the launch of our new Harpy Eagle poster and the unveiling of original artwork by British High Commissioner, Peter Hughes, and artist, Jonathan Urbina, to commemorate Panama the Harpy Eagle's birthday.  Harpies are the largest eagles in the Americas and when their double crested crown is fluffed up they look regal and majestic.  Unfortunately, this species is Near Threatened through out its territory and Critically Endangered in Belize due to deforestation and persecution.  Hence the reason Panama is very important in educating people about these apex predators!"

Predator Party at the Belize Zoo

Predator Party at the Belize Zoo | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

There are a couple of birthdays at the Belize Zoo this week, and some Cayo students got to go and celebrate the occasion.

"The Belize Zoo recently celebrated two important milestones, with a fantastic “Predator Party” for Junior Buddy the Jaguar’s sixth birthday and Panama the Harpy Eagle’s tenth birthday.  To mark the occasions, zoo officials invited children from La Democracia Pre-School and the Infant Two class from the Howard Smith School in Benque Viejo del Carman to join in the celebration and learn more about the contribution of these apex predators to the health of the forest."

Wonders at the Belize Zoo

The Belize Zoo, which is celebrating its 30th year, and just had Panama the Harpy Eagle's 10th 'hatch' day party, is shown in a new video entitled 'The Wonders at the Belize Zoo.'

"The Zoo was buzzing with festivities last week as we celebrated the 10th birthday of Panama our male harpy eagle!  Over 100 students, parents and teachers from the communities of Indian Church, La Democracia, and San Carlos came to the Zoo to wish this beautiful bird a very happy "hatch" day.  Students got to be eagles for a day, with masks and wings, and received prizes, birthday cake, and valuable knowledge about the importance of raptors like Harpy Eagles to our great country.  We thank our friends at The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium for helping us provide a special day for the children of Belize."

Farewell to April the Tapir

Farewell to April the Tapir | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

April the Tapir lived to a ripe old age, for a Tapir, at the Belize Zoo.  April was 30 years old when she went to the big jungle in the sky this week.  RIP, April, Tapir Town won't be the same without you.

In related news, TBZ is preparing to celebrate the 10th birthday of Panama the Harpy Eagle on Friday, November 15th.

"April, for three decades, has brought awareness to the nation of Belize about the special profile of her species, the Central American Tapir, our National Animal.  Thousands of children grew up with April.  They became well aware that our National Animal was a significant part of our Belizean heritage, and April helped establish a sense of pride, appreciation, and, even love, in visitors that met her.  Her birthday parties have served as a platform for community involvement, learning, and, of course, lots of fun for the young and the old.  TBZ is committed to keeping April's legacy alive for years to come."

10 Reasons the Belize Zoo is a Must Do

10 Reasons the Belize Zoo is a Must Do | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Yes!  The animals make the zoo what it is, and they are in their natural habitat.  The best article ever about the Belize Zoo.  This is a must read.  Long live TBZ!

"The Zoo has a Tropical Education Center (TEC) that has dorms, cabins and pond houses. The different style lodging is connected together with trails and we felt like we were camping. We stayed in a pond house, a fully screened-in, raised cabin situated in a private setting among beautiful pine and palm trees. Our cabin had 2 queen beds, a little kitchenette and a bathroom with hot and cold water. It also had a huge screened in deck that wrapped around 2 sides of the house. The cost of staying here ($60-80 US for 2 people) includes a delicious dinner and breakfast, so you don’t have to worry about leaving this forest paradise. It is about a 3 minute ride to the zoo which they will provide."

Belize Zoo gets a great mention

Belize Zoo gets a great mention | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Great account of going to the Belize zoo, the best little zoo in the world.

"I read alot of great stuff about the Belize Zoo. I'm not a fan of animals in cages or enclosures. But I will always take time to support financially, a program that is actually making a difference in a country. Zoos around the world are great places to educate people about conservation and get them up close to animals. In poor countries it's the best way to convince locals that saving the animals is best for their country in the long run. Sometimes it takes seeing a wild animal up close to capture your heart for the rest of your life."
