Guanacaste Park Deck Refurbishment

Guanacaste Park Deck Refurbishment | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Guanacaste National Park had  its swimming deck refurbished.  All the wood used to build it was from fallen trees from Hurricane Earl.  Well done!  Kudos to the Belize Audubon Society!

"Have you been to GNP lately? Stop by and visit our new deck! Replacing the previous swim deck damaged from Hurricane Earl’s flooding in 2016, our new deck is made from re-purposed, salvaged wood from Hurricane Earl’s damage to Cockscomb Basin (under the permit and supervision of the Forest Department).  The collapsed trees have been put to good use almost 2 years later to date!"

Vanilla Hills Post Hurricane Outreach

Vanilla Hills Post Hurricane Outreach | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Feelgood news of the day.  Vanilla Hills donated food and supplies to Caledonia, which was hit hard by Hurricane Earl.

"On August 4th Hurricane Earl made landfall on Belize. This hurricane had a huge impact on several areas in Belize. Not only in San Pedro, Belize City and San Ignacio. There were and still are many more villages affected. One of them is Caledonia close to Orange Walk where the people make their living cutting sugar cane. We heard from this village since the family from one of our worker is living there. The hurricane destroyed the crops and the people have no work, no income, no money to buy food.

When we talked about this to our family on our last trip to Germany. Claudia's Mom immediately decided to help. She used her birthday party as a fundraiser. Instead of getting any presents, she asked friends and family to donate some money. In the end she raised more than 3.300 BZ$. She gave us the money and we arranged everything here. We bought more than 1.800 lbs of rice, beans and flour, as well as coffee and for families with little children we bought milk and diapers. Yesterday we distributed everything to 45 families. Thanks to everybody who supported this little project and a special thanks to a wonderful person (Claudia's Mom) who was so generous starting this fundraiser."

Hurricane Earl Flood Pictures | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Hurricane Earl came to Cayo.  Nobody was hurt, luckily, but some trees were knocked down, and it flooded some on Thursday.  Daniel Velazquez captured some amazing photos of the flooding, and the people of Cayo out enjoying the amazing post-hurricane weather.  Be safe.

Damon Russell got some good pictures too, as did Miriam, and Sera.

The Cayo Welcome Center got some good pictures.

"after a crazy night, went into town did some photography of Hurricane earl flood and had some beers, ran into a old Peace Corps friend, from 20 years back."
