Junior Buddy on Cover of Biology Text

Junior Buddy on Cover of Biology Text | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Junior Buddy is pictured on the 14th edition of Biology.   The author of the book wrote an article the really captures the essence of what the Belize Zoo is all about.

"But before I get to what happened that day, it is important that you understand that the Belize Zoo is anything but a zoo. It is the epicenter of the passion the Belizeans have in preserving the natural wonders of their country. Founded almost 40 years ago by Sharon Matola, a woman whose dedication to conservation and education was an inspiration to all who met her, it has grown to become one of the primary centers of jaguar rehabilitation, conservation, and most importantly, education, in Central America. And as far as I am concerned, the world.

My first encounter with a jaguar happened late in the day on my first trip to the Zoo...  There, on a tree branch, barely 20 yards away, was one of the most magnificent animals I have ever seen.  His name was Junior Buddy, and he was, and in my mind always will be, the flagship ambassador of the jaguar conservation project at the Zoo. Junior Buddy was completely uninterested in what was happening on my side of the fence, but as I approached he gently turned his head in my direction, and stared, unblinking, into my eyes."

Junior Buddy's 8th Birthday Party

Junior Buddy's 8th Birthday Party | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Happy belated birthday, Junior Buddy!  The Belize Zoo celebrated in style, and the San Pedro Scoop(no relation) was there to document the occasion.  Well worth the read, and there are some wicked pictures from the bash.

"I love love love the Belize Zoo with its 125 animals – all native to the country and all in their natural habitats.  In New Jersey that might not be much but in Belize it means amazing, beautiful, exotic creatures.  The Belize Zoo educates kids around the country but yesterday, they brought two schools to the zoo to meet the 'ambassador jaguar' – Junior Buddy – and to celebrate his birthday."

Junior Buddy's Big Birthday Bash

Junior Buddy's Big Birthday Bash | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Junior Buddy had his 7th birthday this week, and The Belize Zoo threw a big bash for it.  Happy birthday, Junior Buddy!  In related news, there's now an action plan for the sustainable development of the Central Belize Corridor, which jaguars and many other animals use, and need.  It's a great start, and you can read more about it on Panthera's or the zoo's sites.

"As promised, Junior Buddy had a fan club of over 200 strong show up at the Zoo yesterday to wish him many more as we celebrated his 7th Birthday.  Students, parents, and teachers from La Democracia and Mahogany Heights communities in the Belize District saw Junior diver headfirst into his pond to retrieve his delicious birthday bone, then proudly feast on it for the rest of the day while his admirers looked on.  The entire school joined TBZ Director Sharon Matola in yet another rendition of the Junior Buddy song, while cameras rolled from Love FM and News 5 news stations.  Games, prizes, snacks, facepainting and fun for all followed for a successful day in celebrating the magnificent jaguar species that still calls Belize its home, and will for many years to come!"

"Lucky Boy" the Jaguar Making a Comeback

"Lucky Boy" the Jaguar Making a Comeback | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Lucky Boy will be fine.  The rescued jaguar is recovering at the Belize Zoo.  Looks like Junior Buddy will have a new friend.  Tonight's news at 6:30pm will feature Lucky Boy.

"The Black Jaguar formerly known as Bosh, now called Lucky Boy - who was saved from certain death a little over a week ago is reported to be making a recovery at the Belize Zoo.

According to the Zoo's facebook page, he's eating well on a special restorative diet, and is friendly with his caregivers, eating directly from their hands.  He is described as a surprisingly calm and easy going jaguar."

Jaguar Encounter at Belize Zoo

Jaguar Encounter at Belize Zoo | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

The Belize Zoo's Jaguar Encounter gets a good write up.  Junior Buddy is world famous.

"The next day we went to the Belize Zoo and tried out their Jaguar Encounter.  If you ever get the chance, I highly recommend it.  It’s $50 USD per cage, and a cage can hold 1-5 people.  C.L. and I were the only ones in our cage plus a jaguar handler.  And the whole experience probably lasted about 10 minutes.

The Belize Zoo has around 14 jaguars…most of them they’ve saved from farmers that had targeted them after losing livestock.  Only three of them are “on display.”  And you can only get up close and personal with one…his name is Junior Buddy.  He was raised in the zoo and is somewhat tame from a wild animal perspective.  But they’re still not crazy enough to let you loose in a jaguar enclosure.  So they have a nice little cage inside his spacious pen that you get to sit in, and he gets to come check YOU out."

"A Trip to the Belize Zoo"

"A Trip to the Belize Zoo" | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

This is a well written article, and it has the history of the Belize Zoo in it.  That's Junior the Jaguar!  There's a video too.

"The Belize Zoo, tagged as 'the best little zoo in the world,' is very unique and different from any other you’ve been to.  It was started in 1983 after a film crew finished a documentary, and had no where to leave the star animals of its show, now tamed they could not be returned to the wild.  One of the crew’s staff stayed behind to care for the animals and the rest is history.  It receives no funding from the government, it only houses native animals, and it has never taken an animal from the wild.  The zoo sits on 29 acres of natural habitat only changed by gravel trails and the animal’s enclosures.  It houses more than 150 animals and more than 45 different species."

Belize Zoo gets a great mention

Great account of going to the Belize zoo, the best little zoo in the world.

"I read alot of great stuff about the Belize Zoo. I'm not a fan of animals in cages or enclosures. But I will always take time to support financially, a program that is actually making a difference in a country. Zoos around the world are great places to educate people about conservation and get them up close to animals. In poor countries it's the best way to convince locals that saving the animals is best for their country in the long run. Sometimes it takes seeing a wild animal up close to capture your heart for the rest of your life."

Junior Buddy's 10th Birthday Bash

Junior Buddy's 10th Birthday Bash | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Happy birthday, Junior Buddy!  They had a celebration at the Belize Zoo for the occasion.  Here's to many more!

"BIRTHDAY BASH FOR JUNIOR BUDDY! Belize's most famous jaguar and "national treasure," Junior Buddy, hit the big 1-0 last week! Over 100 guests joined us to celebrate this very special decade of jaguar conservation in grand fashion.  Our VIP guests included Junior's longtime friends from St. Agnes Anglican School down the road, as well as our "jaguar expert" colleagues from around Belize.

After a review of some cool feline facts about jaguars, everyone joined TBZ Director Sharon in a rousing rendition of the Junior Buddy Song, complete with "dancing jaguars" in the crowd.  The Birthday Boy was eager to receive his birthday bone, quickly diving into his pond the moment it was tossed in. Junior wowed his fans with his speed and agility (still young at heart!), then triumphantly chomped on his prize for all to see."

Predator Party at the Belize Zoo

Predator Party at the Belize Zoo | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

There are a couple of birthdays at the Belize Zoo this week, and some Cayo students got to go and celebrate the occasion.

"The Belize Zoo recently celebrated two important milestones, with a fantastic “Predator Party” for Junior Buddy the Jaguar’s sixth birthday and Panama the Harpy Eagle’s tenth birthday.  To mark the occasions, zoo officials invited children from La Democracia Pre-School and the Infant Two class from the Howard Smith School in Benque Viejo del Carman to join in the celebration and learn more about the contribution of these apex predators to the health of the forest."

Environmental Education at the Belize Zoo

Environmental Education at the Belize Zoo | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Great article about Ecotourism and the Belize Zoo.  The popular night tour is mentioned, and of course, Junior Buddy is in there.  Environmental education is talked about, as is the uniqueness of the Belize Zoo.

"Environmental education helps to provide awareness and knowledge of the threats that endanger biodiversity.  By utilizing such methods as ecotourism and environmental education, the ability to slow the rate of ecological destruction will happen as awareness increases.  The Belize Zoo is a center for environmental education and animal rescue that serves to help natives and foreigners understand and conserve natural resources...

The Belize Zoo is truly one of a kind.  Being able to learn about all of the native animals in the country was such a contrast to the American zoos, because of the different foreign animals that exist in those zoos in America.  I find it very important to learn about all animals, but especially to know about the animals that live in your own ecosystem. Knowing what native animals live in your ecosystem can help you to better protect areas around you."

A Visit to the Belize Zoo

A Visit to the Belize Zoo | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

There are some great pictures of the animals of the Belize Zoo, including Junior Buddy, in this article.

“The Belize Zoo and Tropical Education Center was started in 1983, as a last ditch effort to provide a home for a collection of wild animals which had been used in making documentary films about tropical forests.  Today, The Belize Zoo and Tropical Education Center is settled upon 29 acres of tropical savanna and exhibits over 150 animals, representing over 45 species, all native to Belize.  The zoo keeps animals which were orphaned, rescued, born at the zoo, rehabilitated animals, or sent to The Belize Zoo as donations from other zoological institutions.”

Junior Buddy's Birthday Bash

Happy birthday, Junior Buddy!  Great story from News 7.

"He turned 5 today, and keeping with tradition, the World's Best Little Zoo threw a lavish party befitting one of their most celebrated attractions.
Junior Buddy was the Jaguar cub born in captivity and rejected by his mother, adopted by the Belize Zoo, and in a very short period of time became an international ambassador for Jaguars worldwide."

Junior the Jaguar is loving Obsession, by Calvin Klein.

We love the Belize Zoo!  "Junior Buddy the Jaguar is obsessed with Obsession! The fancy Calvin Klein cologne has been used as feline enrichment by zoos in the US, turning the largest wildcats in the world into overgrown house kittens; affectionately rubbing and sniffing any area sprayed with the cologne. And Junior is no exception! Some pheromone/chemical in the stuff keeps the boy occupied for an impressive amount of time."
