Wild Belize - Head West to Lower Dover Lodge

Wild Belize - Head West to Lower Dover Lodge | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Lower Dover Jungle Lodge got an excellent write up by Elaine Wilson, world famous travel blog writer, who just traveled all around Belize.  Xunanunich, one of the better local Maya sites, is recommended, as is Lower Dover's Swirly Head Wine.

"Lower Dover is a very special place to stay as it situated right on top of the ruins of a once great ancient Mayan city.  The site is extensive and only very partially excavated.  Students come every summer to continue the excavation, but there is so much still to be uncovered and so many stories still untold.  What happened to this once large and thriving city, which was probably a centre of trade and commerce, and what happened to the people who lived there?"

Awesome Aracaris at Lower Dover

Awesome Aracaris at Lower Dover | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Lower Dover Lodge posted some amazing pictuers of the Aracari Toucans that have found a home there.  Great shots!

"Each of the five toucan cousins took turns feasting on what seemed to be honey inside the woodpecker’s hole in a cedar tree.  The birds would eat as much as it could for about 30 seconds before flying away due to constant stinging.  One gulp of honey, two beak swipes at the attacking bees, rinse, repeat.  Occasionally the bird would even catch a bee, and seemingly eat it in one bite!  Other times I could see the bees trying to sting the bird through the camera’s zoom finder, only to have the Aracari feast on its brother or sister one second later."

Baby Toucan at Lower Dover Lodge

Baby Toucan at Lower Dover Lodge | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Lower Dover Jungle Lodge has a toucan nest in a Bullet Tree with a baby toucan in it.  How awesome is that?  That cute little bird is going to be world famous.  Hope it doesn't go to his beak.

"We were never able to confirm baby birds in the nest, until today, one year later, in the exact same Bullet tree!  There is a saying around here on the most copied blog in Belize…  'No bird pic no bird proof.'  These are the pictures of the baby bird sticking its head out of the nest taken this morning.  This was easily one of the most memorable bird sightings and all around nature experiences ever witnessed at Lower Dover."

Corozo aka Cohune Palm – Multi-Purpose Maya Tree

Corozo aka Cohune Palm – Multi-Purpose Maya Tree | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

This is a great article on Cohune Palms from Lower Dover Lodge.  Some interesting facts.

"Many believe the Maya had many practical uses for the tree (oil, roofing material, and even salt). Local guides go a step further and describe Maya shamans using the palms as proof of their spirit connections. When the wind would blow through the palms located around their settlement, shamans would say…'I told you the Gods were listening!'

'Heart of Palm' or 'Palmito' is a rare but well known local delicacy that is delicious in salads and commonly enjoyed over the Easter holiday. Unfortunately, to obtain the palm heart, the tree must be cut down, which is why they are so rare and usually carry a high cost.

The nut is a favorite food of the gibnut, and is also eaten by people, despite the difficulty in cracking the shell. Cohune has a high oil content, yet it requires extensive extraction processing, so it’s not very economically viable for biofuels. Many have tried to mechanize the process, but the Maya version of cracking the outer shell on stones, mashing the nuts by hand tool, and boiling the oil out in water remains the most effective way of extraction."

Nohoch Che’en Cave Tubing Adventure

Nohoch Che’en Cave Tubing Adventure | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Lower Dover has a great write up on cave tubing at Jaguar Paw.  Pictures of the entire ride too.

"Cave tubing is a very popular day trip for Belize cruise ship passengers. For guests of Lower Dover Belize Jungle Lodge wanting to go cave tubing, the trip is best if you miss this midday gringo herd. Early morning or late afternoon trips are best."

Swirly Head Fruit Wines

Swirly Head Fruit Wines | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Swirly Head wine has the best sorrel wine around, and it's made here in Cayo.  Lower Dover Lodge is where it's made, and they do it right.  It's pleasantly dry, and goes good with just about everything.  Cool label too.  They've been producing for over 2 years now, and have got the technique down to a science.

ATM From Lower Dover Lodge

ATM From Lower Dover Lodge | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

In this travel article, Actun Tunichil Muknal and the Lower Dover Lodge both get great reviews.  And they explain the Mayan ruins that were found there too.

"I was originally drawn to this remote but accessible lodge because of the location.  I had ventured to the Belizean mainland from the cayes to finally see the ATM cave and since the drive would be much quicker from Lower Dover than by going all the way to San Ignacio for the night I was sold.  It also helped that they offer options for every budget."

Cayo's Lower Dover Lodge writes about the Belize zoo

Cayo's Lower Dover Lodge writes about the Belize zoo | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

The best little zoo in the world!  We love the Belize zoo!  Great pictures in the article: "You’ve probably to been to many Zoos, but we highly doubt any are like the experience at the Belize Zoo. The Zoo is home to over 45 species of mammals, birds, and reptiles all native to Belize. All the animals were orphaned, rescued, born at the zoo, rehabilitated, or sent to The Belize Zoo as donations from other zoological institutions."
