Eco Kids Learn about Sustainability

Eco Kids Learn about Sustainability | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

The Eco Kids have gotten presetations on Sustainability and Solid Waste Management while having a great time at their Summer camp.

"After finishing touches were put on the bracelets, campers lined up and marched to the Chaa Creek conference room, where Mr. Brion Young gave a presentation on the various ways to use environmentally friendly practices in everyday life.  Mr. Young highlighted several of the ways in which Chaa Creek recycles, such as using old cardboard boxes as mulch at the Maya Organic Farm, as well as giving campers advice on recycling at home."

Chaa Creek's Awesome Eco-Kids Summer Camp Experience

Chaa Creek's Awesome Eco-Kids Summer Camp Experience | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

The Ambergris Today was invited to see the Eco Kids Summer Camp.  They got some amazing shots of the fun and games.  Their account of the experience is a great read, and is very well written.  You really get the feel of the experience as they talk about the Maya Farm and then the Friends for Conservation and Development.

"You see, to become an Eco Kid the youngsters were required to submit a 300-word written essay to Chaa Creek’s scholarship committee, which then shortlists the entries ensuring that children with an eco-passion from each of Belize’s six district attends.   The 24 winners chosen from this year’s 86 entries then participated in archaeological excavations at ancient Maya sites, took part in hikes and horseback excursions to study local flora and fauna and Maya medicinal plants, and participated in song writing and talent show sessions, hands-on sustainable organic farming techniques, and supervised water activities.  It was great to see that Lucy Fleming would take time off her busy schedule in running the resort to spend so much time with the campers; she was there from early in the morning making sure everything and everybody was okay."

Chaa Creek has quite a farm on their hands.  The best eco-lodge in the country grows much of their own produce.  They have goats, chickens, turkeys, and many other animals there, and they compost just about everything.

Eco Kids Learn About Land Conservation

The Eco Kids had fun at Chaa Creek's Maya Organic Farm.

"From pitaya harvesting to learning how to grow okro, campers got down and dirty while learning about some of the more interesting farming techniques.  There were also a couple opportunities to sample herbs such as lemongrass, mint and basil.  Some campers even decided to try nibbling on the cayenne peppers hanging from a nearby bush, but quickly reconsidered once their mouths started burning!"

Eco Kids Tour Maya Organic Farm

Eco Kids Tour Maya Organic Farm | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

The Eco Kids got to tour Chaa Creek's Maya Organic Farm with the owner, Mick Fleming.

"The eco-campers had a chance to tour the operation and recognize many local plants, trees, herbs, and produce.  They were also treated to some live action as we met the sheep, goats, chickens, turkeys, heifers, and even the bull.  To top off the farm adventure, the kids had a chance to stick their entire arms into the compost piles, as Mr. Mick explained to them how everything in an organic farm is connected, right down to the animals’ feces!  No wonder they all washed their hands so well before lunch.  An afternoon filled with swimming, canoeing, and lots of fun in the sun has left this blogger’s brain on empty so we will let the pictures tell the rest of the tale."
