Boise State Visits Belize Zoo

Boise State Visits Belize Zoo | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it
Boise State University, which has 'The Last Flight of the Scarlet Macaw' as it's campus read for 2012 -2013, got to visit the Belize Zoo. Looks like they had a great time seeing the zoo, which, along with Sharon Matola, is a big part of the book.

"Although the Zoo was closed to the public, Sharon and her staff graciously opened the zoo for our group and provided a guided tour which included many behind the scenes areas. Below are a few photos of our memorable visit to the Belize Zoo. Our Pat the Great Cat team presented Sharon their education trail materials they prepared for the community fair"

The Story Behind "Pat the (Great) Cat: A Jaguar’s Journey"

The Story Behind "Pat the (Great) Cat: A Jaguar’s Journey" | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

A Peace Corps Volunteer describes how 'Pat the Great Cat' came to be.  The book can be found at the Belize Zoo.

"The story of the publishing of the new book 'Pat the (Great)Cat: A Jaguar’s Journey' is a story of two women’s passion for literacy and learning.  It is also a story of collaboration between the people of Belize and the United States.  'Pat the (Great) Cat: A Jaguar’s Journey' is the result of an international literacy initiative that is joining children across the United States and Belize through the true story of a jaguar from Belize who found his world forever changed as people came to share his land...  Students from Belize and from urban Milwaukee, Wisconsin (ages 9-13), took on the task of creating international awareness through an extraordinary literacy journey that celebrates not only the jaguar but the importance of joining hands across nations to impact our natural world through education and friendship."

Have you seen the 'Pat the Great Cat' website?  It's based upon the book, and gives the history of the story and the literacy project behind it.

"I come from a beautiful tropical place called Belize, in Central America.  Belize is home to many types of tropical forests, mountains, grassy savannahs and small islands called cayes with beautiful sand beaches.  Jaguars like the tropical forests best, and we love to prowl through deep, dark caves that provide good shelter in bad weather.  I’ll let you in on a big secret.  The caves are cool, for a lot of reasons."

Belize Zoo at 30

Belize Zoo at 30 | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

The Belize Zoo wrote all about their 30th anniversary festivities.  Surely the next 30 will see more great programs and improvements.  And a big congratulations to Pat the jaguar, who had 2 cubs.

"The Zoo also used this historic occasion to highlight a progressive education effort, the promotion of a book entitled, PAT THE GREAT CAT.  Written by students from Belize and Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the book features a jaguar named Pat who is a graduate of the zoo’s Problem Jaguar Rehabilitation Program.  Once a cattle killer, Pat now lives happily in the Milwaukee Zoo with his mate, Stella.   On the 13th of November, Pat and Stella became the proud parents of two jaguar cubs."

Bi-National Environmental Education Institute

Bi-National Environmental Education Institute | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Last week, 9 Belizean teachers, along with 13 education professionals from The State University of New York, participated in the 9th annual Teacher Institute in Environmental Studies and Culture program sponsored by the Belize Foundation for Conservation, and hosted at Chaa Creek.

"The Institute provided the teachers with the opportunity to engage in cross-cultural collaboration with international educators in order to examine and share best practices in education applied toward the study of the environment and cultures.  Through experiential learning tasks, the teachers were able to explore and develop an understanding of ancient Maya civilization, archeology, natural resource conservation, and ecotourism.  The teachers were also introduced to a new book written by children of Belize and the U.S. as part of an international literacy initiative. 'Pat the (Great) Cat: A Jaguar’s Journey' chronicles the true story of a jaguar whose dramatic journey from Belize to the United States is both heart-breaking and heart-warming.  The Belize Ministry of Education has chosen the book as a supplemental text for the coming school year.  It may be that this is the first time that the students are authors of their own textbook!"
