Hobbs Craft Beer Video

Hobbs Craft Beer Video | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Video of the month.  Belize has a craft beer, and it's 12 ounces per can.  Hobbs Brewing Company has a nicely shot and produced video highlighting their craft beer making process...and consuming.  They're located in Placencia, and hopefully they'll have a distribution outlet in Cayo soon.

Hobbs Brewing Co. Opens New Brewery in Belize

Hobbs Brewing Co. Opens New Brewery in Belize | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Great news on the beer front.  Belize is getting 2 new choices of beer, starting this Easter.  The Hobbs Brewing Company's Wildcat IPA and Hummingbird Belizean Golden Ale will be officially launched this Easter in Placencia.  If you're visiting Placencia before Easter, they do already have it available.  The cans, which have a full 12 ounces, are artistic and unique.

"Hobbs Brewing Co., which opened as brewpub in New Hampshire, in 2014, will begin distribution with 12 oz. cans and kegs throughout Placencia, Belize, in April...

Hobbs will feature two beers as it begins production in Central America: Wildcat IPA and Hummingbird Belizean Golden Ale.

Wildcat IPA, so named because Belize is home to the world’s largest Jaguar preserve, is a 6 percent ABV India Pale Ale featuring a tropical and citrusy hop character. Wildcat is the only IPA available in the country. Meanwhile, Hummingbird is a light, crisp and easy-to drink ale that is just 4.7 percent ABV.

They will be sampling these beers at the upcoming Easter Festival in the Village of Placencia on April 20."

Belize on Lonely Planet’s 2017 Best Value Destinations

Belize on Lonely Planet’s 2017 Best Value Destinations | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Belize is number 6 on Lonely Planet's Best Value Destinations for 2017.  Picture is of the Jungle Splash pontoon boat on Vaca Lake.

"Belize is often thought of as one of Central America’s pricier options – but let’s take a fresh look. Here you can dive or snorkel as though you’re in the Caribbean and tour Mayan ruins such as Caraco, found deep in wildlife-packed jungle that could only be in Central America. And you won’t face long journeys: Belize is the same size as Wales or Massachusetts. Belize’s proximity to Mexico and the Caribbean has ensured a lively and exceptionally good-value street-food scene, making budget meals effortless. Yes, there are big-ticket resorts on Ambergris Caye, but head south to Placencia and Hopkins for laid- back beach culture that’s still making its way onto the map."

Cayo leads Belize on Trip Advisor's 'Best Destinations in Central America'

Cayo leads Belize on Trip Advisor's 'Best Destinations in Central America' | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Earlier this year, Trip Advisor ranked The Lodge at Chaa Creek in the top 25 hotels in  Central America.  Now, they've released their top 25 destinations.  Belize has 4 destinations on the list, and Cayo is ranked highest of those at number 5.  San Pedro is number 6, probably due to the clock tower jumbotron mess.  Placencia, and somehow Belize City, are also on the list.

"It’s true: parts of Belize are getting touristy.  But San Ignacio remains rustic, making it a great base for budget-friendly tropical adventure travel.  Canoe on the Macal River, or walk to Mayan ruins at Cahal Pech (just be warned: it's uphill)."

Belize Boasts 3 of Best Central American Resorts

Belize Boasts 3 of Best Central American Resorts | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Congratulations, Blancaneaux Lodge!  They were listed on Travel and Leisure's top 10 list of best Central American resorts.  Also from Belize were Turtle Inn and Matachica.  Well deserved.

"Belize, which has been steadily gaining popularity among travelers in recent years, also had several winners this year, including two of Francis Ford Coppola’s resorts. The beachfront Turtle Inn (No. 9) in Placencia maintains a “very cool, laid back vibe,” according to one voter, but still has an 'excellent staff [that is] very attentive.' No. 8 Blancaneaux Lodge, set in the center of the country, gives guests access to stunning nature reserves and Mayan sites."

Tropic Air Starts New Cayo Flights

Tropic Air Starts New Cayo Flights | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Tropic Air starts their new flights to and from Cayo, using the newly paved Maya Flats airstrip, today.  There are 4 inbound and 4 outbound flights every day, and while 3 are to Belize City, there is one that goes to and from Placencia.

"Located in western Belize, San Ignacio serves as the capital of Cayo District.  It got its start from mahogany and chicle production in the Colonial era, but has gradually evolved into the center of commerce and tourism for western Belize.  Visit the area to see its many Maya sites (including Cahal Pech, Caracol, and Xunantunich), caves such as ATM, and other sites such as the Mountain Pine Ridge, Tapir Mountain Reserve and the Macal River.  Cayo is also home to many award winning resorts and nature programs (like the Green Iguana Project)."

Dwayne Flower's Fundraiser

Dwayne Flower's Fundraiser | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Dwayne Flowers was badly injured when a gas tank exploded.  They are trying to raise funds for him and his wife while he is getting treatment in Atlanta.  Please help him out.

"On July 3, 2013, Dwayne Flowers, a self-employed Belizean laborer, received 2nd and 3rd degree burns over 85% of his body in a tragic butane tank explosion.  Initially, he was airlifted from his hometown of Placencia, Belize, to a hospital in Belize City, where he received the basic care they could provide.  Shortly thereafter, he was transported by a very, very expensive medical transport plane to the Joseph M. Still Burn Center in Atlanta, GA, where is he receiving exellent medical care.

While his medical care in Atlanta has been generously donated, the cost of both flights, the Belize City medical expenses, as well as his wife, Cindy's, day-to-day living expenses, as she remains by his side, need to be covered.   Anything you can do to help this newlywed couple (they were married in February) with their bills would allow Dwayne to heal quicker without having the burden of this cost on his shoulders. Ámuñegü (In Times to Come)

Sounds inspiring!  Belize is getting another socially responsible documentary done.  Andy Palacio's amazing music will be the background for the documentary.

"Our project, Ámuñegü, a full length documentary film, is a story told through the eyes of two communities, Placencia and Seine Bight, trying to defend a balance they have maintained for generations. The Placencia Lagoon is home to many species and is the nursery for local fish stocks, manatees, rays and dolphins, and is also the livelihood of several regional communities including people of Garifuna, Creole and Mayan desent. In recent years, a rise in unregulated development has damaged much of the Lagoon. Our documentary will follow community leaders and fishermen who are trying to protect what makes Placencia unique, culturally rich and self-sustainable. We will share their story at film festivals internationally because we believe that their struggle is echoed in other communities around the world."
