Belize Macaws Take 3rd Place

Belize Macaws Take 3rd Place | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Congratulations, Belize Macaws!  They took 3rd place at the Central American Rugby 7s Tournament, which took place in El Salvador.  Well done!

"Super proud of the Belize Macaws (national rugby 7s team), who took third place in the Central American Rugby 7s tournament held in San Salvador last Saturday. They took on the Central American Champions in their first overseas encounter, and eventually walked away with two wins out of four games against other Guatemalan and El Salvadoran national 7s teams. Pictured here is the team with Belizean Ambassador to El Salvador, Margaret Juan) and Captain Raheem Cummings presenting pendant Belize flags to the Catpains of the other teams - we were the only ones to do this. Our guys also presented small gifts to all the officials - again, only we. So, they put Belize on the Central American map and I am SUPER SUPER PROUD!"

Rugby Belize Project

Rugby Belize Project | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

There's a new rugby league in Belize.  Great to see, and they have some good information on their website.

"There have been many studies on the benefits of community-based activities and sports for the youth, all indicated that where sport is encouraged and developed at community level, youth become engaged in a more healthy and beneficial lifestyle.   Youth, when given opportunities to participate in a wide variety of sports, can and do take that opportunity.  There is evidence that in economically changed societies, encouraging the youth to actively engage in sport, makes a huge difference to the direction these young lives eventually take.  They will use the physicality of sport and the opportunity to ‘let off steam’ as an alternative to street gangs and involvement in petty crime."

Cayo Baymen Rugby National Champions

Cayo Baymen Rugby National Champions | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Congratulations, Cayo Baymen!  They are the 2019 national champions in Rugby 7's.  The British High Commission has many great pictures from the event, which was held at Broaster Stadium on Saturday.

"On Saturday 23 November, High Commissioner Claire Evans was in San Ignacio to attend the Belize Rugby 7's National Finals between British Army Training Support Unit Belize and Cayo Baymen RFC. The High Commissioner took the opportunity to present some "Rugby is Great" balls to Rugby Belize's President Tony Gillings and National team coach Dean Clemison prior to the start of the games. A great display of rugby saw BATSUB defeat the Cayo Baymen in the final match of the season, however it was not enough and the Baymen finished in first place as 2019 National Champions.

A friendly Inernational match followed between Belize and Honduras which saw the visitors run out victorious with a score of 50 -10. The High Commissioner was asked to present the trophies to the International teams alongside Fredy Fernandez, Consul of Honduras to Belize, who presented medals to the national teams. A great day of rugby was had and we look forward to the new season which commences in February 2020."
