Xunantunich Mayan Ruins of Cayo

Xunantunich Mayan Ruins of Cayo | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Xunantunich got a very nice write up.  The article has lots of great pictures of the site.

"About 20 minutes from Santa Elena, we arrived in San Jose Succotz. San Jose Succotz is a Maya village consisting mainly of people of Yucatec Maya descent. It is also the location of the famous ruins. After we got off the bus, we, then, took a 5-minute ferry ride crossing the river to access the remote ruins. Next was a van ride approximately 5-10 minutes to get to the site. We have to walk uphill and after few minutes, we finally saw the ruins. It was truly a sight to behold...

The Introductory Site History and Display Centers is found at the entrance to the center and is also one of the major attractions in the ruins site. Guests can see more of the artifacts. They can get more and detailed information of the discovery and history of the Mayan culture."

Caving Around Cayo

Caving Around Cayo | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Cayo has the caves.  The article is actually called '5 things to do in Belize besides diving' but the first 2 they mention are what Cayo excels at.  Actun Chapat and ATM both get mentioned in the article.  How they missed Crystal Paradise, which is known for amazing birding, nobody knows.

"While neighbouring Mexico and Guatemala get all the press for Mayan sites, Belize was once the centre of the Mundo Maya.  At its peak, the Mayan civilization in Belize is said to have reached over a million people.  This means plenty of archaeological sites, some still buried under thick bush and, most fascinating of all, sacrificial caves now open to the public for supervised spelunking.  You can hop on the popular Actun Tunichil Muknal tour to view the skeletal remains of a young Maya girl, but there are also others worth exploring.  Arrange a visit to Actun Halal and Actun Chapat, in the western village of San Jose Succotz, through Belizean Sun Tours—there, your group will likely have the xibalba or Mayan underworld all to yourselves.

Learning by Serving, One Community at a Time | PRLog | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Great news for Succotz, and the Institute for Sustainable International Studies.

"The Institute for Sustainable International Studies (ISIS) has partnered with the village of Succotz in the Cayo district of Belize. This effort provides students with an opportunity to learn while doing volunteer work that supports the needs and goals of the village. The Village Council, two primary schools and a high school, and other village organizations identify projects while ISIS finds student groups and interns to assist with those projects...

As part of their commitment to education, a group within the village has started a library in Succotz. Students with ISIS, from Shenandoah University and the University of Toronto, brought books to donate to the library, reflecting the cultures and literature from their area.

In February, the University of Toronto sent 10 students and a professor who focused their time in Belize on the village of Succotz. After an introduction to Belize, Cayo and Succotz, the students explored the issue of youth and nutrition."
