Congratulations, Dezerie Phillips, Senior Superintendent, for being named Belize Woman of the Year by the U.S. Embassy!  Well deserved.

"You are an inspiration to women in Belize, and women around the world.  Through your example of excellence you teach girls and women that they can achieve anything in any field.  Dezerie Jacklyn Phillips was born on December 22, 1967 and joined the Belize Police Department on December 1, 1985 and worked her way up the ranks during the course of twenty eight plus years to her current post of Senior Superintendent...

Phillips' passion is community engagement and empowerment, which is one of the reasons she held the post of commader community policing for three years and was recently transferred to Belize City to effect the office with the level of energy and enthusiasm she holds so passionately in the concept, philosophy and implementation of community policing initiatives, which has proven to be a very effective tool in crime fighting efforts.

Congratulations to Rita Coleman, principle at Hattieville Government School.  Channel 7 interviews her, and those that nominated her for the award.

"As principal of the Hattieville Government School and a resident of the community, Mrs. Coleman saw first-hand, many of the challenges facing her students, their families, and her neighbors. She founded LEAP to help. She has a special interest in helping single mothers overcoming the obstacles they confront, and hopes to expand on her efforts to provide opportunities for these young women to hone their parenting skills, and where possible, discover ways to generate income, and perhaps continue their education."

"LEAP and Mrs. Coleman support those in need in many other ways. Every Year, LEAP organizes and holds a Christmas party for more than 300 needy children, where they can enjoy a turkey dinner complete with desserts and a toy. The last Thursday of every month, for the past 10 years, Mrs. Coleman has hosted, in her home, a senior citizens group meeting to provide stimulation, a light meal, and fellowship to older citizens."
