BWRC's Wild Spring Breaks

BWRC's Wild Spring Breaks | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

The Belize Wildlife Referral Clinic is doing 'wild' Spring Break study abroad classes for 2014.  Sounds like a unique learning experience that is fun, and introduces Belizean culture at the same time.

In related news, they are also offering their Wildlife Medicine & Conservation Program courses too.  http://www.belizewildlifeclinic.org/wildlife-medicine-conservation/

"Spend a Wild-Spring-Break in Belize with BWRC! Great for veterinary student groups.  2014 slots available...  The Wild-Spring-Break program is an intensive program which focuses on key topics in wildlife medicine. This program also introduces wildlife rescue and rehabilitation; and wildlife conservation strategies...  Students visit wildlife and conservation organizations around Belize; and guest speakers enrich the course content with perspectives drawn from the front lines of wildlife medicine and conservation.  In between visiting field sites and classroom sessions, students enjoy recreational activities and are introduced to Belizean culture."

Nova Scotia CC tourism students coming to Belize

Nova Scotia CC tourism students coming to Belize | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Tourism students coming to check out Belize.  We have a lot of tourism students here to show them around.  We assume that they'll be in Cayo for a lot of the trip since they "will get to take in all the local tourism attractions, visit a jaguar preserve and even stay a night in a Mayan home."  They sound excited.

"'Yeah, we’re going to come back tired and sore and dirty and stinky, but we’re going to be in a country for two full weeks – which is only a flash in the pan really,' said instructor Adam Rumsey, one of the leaders on the expedition. 'In that two weeks we’re going to see as much of their tourism industry as possible. That’s the key. Yes there’s some down time and yes there’s some beach time, and there’s some great experiences, but the whole thing is to experience their tourism industry and bring those experiences home.'

Belize is a burgeoning tourism destination that is about to explode, Rumsey said, with many cool sites to take in. What this group hopes to focus on is the eco-tourism."

Toucan Education Program's Belize Course

TEP has a great video out showing all the amazing things they do for their 3 week Belize course.  They do a lot in Cayo, of course.  They tour the Green Iguana Conservation Project.  Xunantunich is on there.  They show the inner workings of the Chilillo Dam too.

"The Belize Course was developed and directed by Dr. Jonathan Warner, Economics Tutor at Quest University in British Columbia, Canada.  The course was directed in Belize for a little over three weeks in its entirety.  Students were afforded an opportunity to follow the course theme and or take on mini research projects of their own.  In an effort to give students a deeper understanding of the issues facing the country; the course skillfully combined guest lectures, co-curricular, and extra curricular activities."

Great news for Succotz, and the Institute for Sustainable International Studies.

"The Institute for Sustainable International Studies (ISIS) has partnered with the village of Succotz in the Cayo district of Belize. This effort provides students with an opportunity to learn while doing volunteer work that supports the needs and goals of the village. The Village Council, two primary schools and a high school, and other village organizations identify projects while ISIS finds student groups and interns to assist with those projects...

As part of their commitment to education, a group within the village has started a library in Succotz. Students with ISIS, from Shenandoah University and the University of Toronto, brought books to donate to the library, reflecting the cultures and literature from their area.

In February, the University of Toronto sent 10 students and a professor who focused their time in Belize on the village of Succotz. After an introduction to Belize, Cayo and Succotz, the students explored the issue of youth and nutrition."

Study Abroad with ISIS Belize

Study Abroad with ISIS Belize | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

The Institute for Sustainable International Studies answers the question, "Why study abroad in Belize?"

"Their activities included visits to the Belize Zoo, the Community Baboon Sanctuary, Belize Bird Rescue, Cahal Pech, Caracol and Xuanantunich Maya archaeological sites, and government agencies such as Beltraide, the Belize Tourism Board and the Protected Areas Conservation Trust...The work of students and interns who visit Belize, benefit Belizean organizations and communities in several ways: through the generation of new ideas, by providing time and effort to carry out locally defined projects and by the donation from ISIS of part of their tuition to support the organizations they visited and worked with."
