Belize's Wild Interior

Belize's Wild Interior | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Cayo, referred to as 'Belize's Wild Interior,' got a great write up in the adventure section of Men's Journal magazine.  They mention Caracol, Xunantunich, the Black Hole drop, and Waterfall Cave, among other great activities.  Happy tourist season!

"Avoid the cruise-ship crowds at Altun Ha and head to Xunantunich and Caracol, deep in Cayo district.  On a hilltop seven miles outside the backpacker hub of San Ignacio, Xunantunich is reached via a hand-cranked ferry across the Mopan River and a hike.  The ceremonial center, including the 130-foot-tall El Castillo pyramid, has been restored to its eighth-century glory.  For a more strenuous outing, trek to the lost city of Caracol. Buried in Chiquibul National Park and only partially excavated, the 15-square-mile complex has the stones (including the 141-foot-high Caana pyramid, still the country's tallest structure) to prove its former might."

Black Hole Drop

One of Caves Branch's most amazing tours is their famous Black Hole Drop, where you rappel into a 300 foot deep cenote.  If you crave adventure in Cayo, this is for you.  Some of the best Cayo jungle lodges, including Crystal Paradise, Mariposa, and Parrot Nest, got to experience it so they could better answer their guest's questions about the unique adventure.

"Ian Anderson's Caves Branch Jungle Lodge offers one of the most extreme rappelling adventures in Belize with their Black Hole Drop.  It's around an hour hike to a huge cenote that you rappell 300 feet into.  You then have a delicious lunch, and explore the cenote.  There are caves in it too."

Cayo's Old West Feel

Cayo's Old West Feel | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Cayo got a great write up in International Living.  Yes, Everyone should visit Cayo, even though the only things we have here are Mayan archaeological sites, rivers, waterfalls, caves, hiking trails, butterfly farms, medicinal trails, ziplines, cenotes, canoe adventures, botanical gardens, granite pools, Lake Benque, ATM, award winning hotels...  Photo is from the Black Hole Drop adventure at Caves Branch Lodge.

"If you love lazy rivers, vast rolling hills, and fertile farmland and rainforests where you can test your gardening skills, Cayo is for you.  The heart of this area are the twin towns of San Ignacio and Santa Elena, which both enjoy an Old West feel…but in a tropical frontiersman kind of way that you’ll find only in Belize.  Bargains can be found here, too—not only on real estate but on the huge amount of produce and fresh cheeses grown and produced here by local Mennonites."
