The Green Guide to Belize

The Green Guide to Belize  | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it
The Wanderlust magazine has a great online article about Belize, and since it focuses on sustainability and culture, Cayo is prominently covered. Xunantunich is all over the article, and Actun Tunichil Muknal is highlighted. Definitely worth a read, and they really made a nice online presentation of all the info.

'The San Antonio Women's Cooperative was started by a group of nine Maya women who came together to create sustainable economic opportunities for their community. By producing handcrafted textiles using traditional methods and natural dyes, they preserve their cultural heritage for future generations while also generating income...

Xunantunich, situated in the western Cayo District, offers panoramic views from its imposing main temple, El Castillo. Nearby, Caracol is the largest Maya site in Belize and features impressive architectural feats and a rich history of conflict with neighbouring states.'

Escape The Crowds: Visit The Great Mayan City Off-The-Beaten Track In The Jungles Of Belize

Escape The Crowds: Visit The Great Mayan City Off-The-Beaten Track In The Jungles Of Belize | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Caracol got another great write-up, and they described it quite well, along with the fact that not that many people get to see it due to it being remote.  Worth a read.

'One of the largest Maya cities, Caracol, is rarely visited and is lost far in the jungle off the beaten path in Belize.

Caracol may not be a household name, unlike Tikal and Chichen Itza, but it is one of the large Maya archeological sites. It is located around 25 miles south of the Maya site of Xunantunich on the Vaca Plateau, about 1,600 feet above sea level. It was one of the most important Maya centers in the Maya Lowlands during the Classic Period.

Caracol was rediscovered in 1937 by a native logger called Rosa Mai. At the time, Belize (then called British Honduras) was a part of the British Empire. It was visited the next year by A. H. Anderson - an archeological commissioner.'

3 Things You Must Do in Belize

3 Things You Must Do in Belize | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Nice article about what to do when visiting Belize for the first time.  Caving, Maya archaeological sites, and visiting the reef are the 3 focused on.  The Old House Hostel gets a great shout out for Cayo, along with the Soul Project.  Xunantunich, Caracol, and Actun Tunichil Muknal are highly recommended.

"No matter what level of adventure (and even history) you’re looking for, there are plenty of options to embrace the Belizean cave system in a truly epic way or in a slow, relaxing way, or both! It’s up to you.

Quite honestly, these are some of the best caves we’ve ever visited. Primarily what makes these Belizean caves so unique is that water is flowing through most of them. So, these adventures are just as much about hiking as they are swimming through the depths of the earth. And oh boy, does that water feel good. Look up refreshing in the dictionary and you’ll see Belizean river waters in there (you won’t actually if you’re considering looking that up - but it totally should). The water is perfectly blue and often crystal clear."

5 Belize Maya Archaeological Sites made Trip Advisor Travelers' Choice Awards for 2016, and 3 of those are in Cayo.  Caracol, the most impressive Maya site around, was ranked 4th place, Xunantunich was ranked 7th, and Cahal Pech took 14th.  Might be why Cayo was ranked as 7th for places to visit in Central America.

Lamanai came in 8th, and Altun Ha was ranked 20th.

Jungle, Ruins, and Iguanas in Cayo

Jungle, Ruins, and Iguanas in Cayo | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

The Washington Post has a great article about all the great sights to see in Cayo.  ATM, Xunantunich, Caracol, Cahal Pech, and the Green Iguana Conservation Project are all highlighted.

"Just a fraction of Caracol, a once powerful Maya city state, has been unearthed by archaeologists.  Once home to 150,000 inhabitants (nearly twice the population of Belize's current industrial center, Belize City), the site was lost until a logger stumbled upon it in the 1930s while in search of mahogany.  Nearly a century later, 90 percent of it still belongs to the jungle. Shards of ancient pottery are scattered around the complex, which includes astronomical buildings, ball courts, palaces and a 141-foot-tall pyramid that remains the tallest man-made structure in Belize.  The guttural intonations of howler monkeys and the eerie screech of the yellow-tailed bird provide the soundtrack for those wandering through the massive archaeological site."

Belize's Wild Interior

Belize's Wild Interior | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Cayo, referred to as 'Belize's Wild Interior,' got a great write up in the adventure section of Men's Journal magazine.  They mention Caracol, Xunantunich, the Black Hole drop, and Waterfall Cave, among other great activities.  Happy tourist season!

"Avoid the cruise-ship crowds at Altun Ha and head to Xunantunich and Caracol, deep in Cayo district.  On a hilltop seven miles outside the backpacker hub of San Ignacio, Xunantunich is reached via a hand-cranked ferry across the Mopan River and a hike.  The ceremonial center, including the 130-foot-tall El Castillo pyramid, has been restored to its eighth-century glory.  For a more strenuous outing, trek to the lost city of Caracol. Buried in Chiquibul National Park and only partially excavated, the 15-square-mile complex has the stones (including the 141-foot-high Caana pyramid, still the country's tallest structure) to prove its former might."

5 Must See Mayan Sites in Belize

5 Must See Mayan Sites in Belize | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

The Huffington Post has another article that features 3 of Cayo's Mayan archaeological sites.  Cahal Pech, Caracol, and Xunantunich are featured in this easy to read article from Larry Waight.

"Archaeologists affirm that Belize was once the center of the Mayan civilization because of the country's varied flora and fauna and abundance of marine life, which was favorable to the growth of the population.  Between 250 AD to 900 AD, over one million Mayan people lived in present day Belize, and today a treasure trove of sacred caves, beautiful palaces and ball courts can be found in ancient Mayan cities throughout Belize."

Matthew Ganibi's curator insight, October 12, 2013 10:56 PM

Belize, a city that was home to over a million between 250 and 900 A.D., was once the center of the Mayan civilization. Favorable living conditions were made possible thanks to the varied flora & fauna and abundant marine life nearby. Five of the Belize's must-see temples include: Xunantunich, Caracol, Cahal Pech, Altun Ha and Lamanai.

Great travel article about Belize, and it's spot on covering mostly Cayo. From Xunantunich to Caracol to the San Antonio Women's Cooperative. Worth a read.

'A short drive from the co-operative is the Xunantunich archaeological site, which I access by hand-cranked ferry over the Mopan River. There’s a hardly another soul around as I climb the central pyramid, El Castillo’s gargantuan steps up to its giddy heights. At 40 metres, it is one of the tallest structures in Belize (the tallest pyramid at the Caracol Mayan complex, around 25 miles south, tops out at around 43 metres) and from the top I can see over the border into Guatemala in one direction and miles of trees in the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve to the east.'

16 Best Mayan Ruins to Explore (Actun Tunichil Muknal to Xunantunich)

16 Best Mayan Ruins to Explore (Actun Tunichil Muknal to Xunantunich) | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Caracol, Xunantunich, and Actun Tunichil Muknal are all highlighted in Green Globe Travel's list of amazing Maya Archaeological Sites(not ruins please).  They have an interesting take on the translation of Xunantunich...  There's some good history information in the article.

"Built some 1300 years ago, Xunantunich (whose name means 'Sculpture of Lady' in the Maya language) was the ceremonial center in the Belize Valley.

The site is located along the Mopan River, near the border with Guatemala. Its central feature is Belize’s second tallest structure (at 130 feet), which is rather generically referred to as 'El Castillo.'

Though archaeological evidence indicates the area was populated as early as 1000 BC, it didn’t blossom until it was connected with nearby Naranjo in the late seventh century. The site consists of over a dozen palaces and temples, half a dozen plazas, ball courts, and much more that still has yet to be unearthed.

One of the highlights of Xunantunich is that visitors are allowed to climb to the top of El Castillo. The stunning scenic view from the top includes the surrounding ruins, then stretches out over miles and miles of jungle. Another nice part of this site is that it doesn’t have the overwhelming crowds that mass tourism attractions like Chicken Itza get."

Interesting read about Xunantunich and Caracol.

"The summer of 2016 produced discoveries of tremendous importance for understanding the political history of the Classic Maya lowlands.  While excavating Structure A9 at Xunantunich, Belize, Jaime Awe and his team unearthed two inscribed monuments of rare significance, their contents revealed in detailed textual analyses by Christophe Helmke (Helmke and Awe 2016a, 2016b).  These inscriptions support and elaborate some existing proposals, while supplying entirely new twists to the story.  What follows are a few thoughts inspired by these finds."

The Panel at Xunantunich

The Panel at Xunantunich | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

NICH unveiled the panel this week at Xunantunich.

"The panel may have been originally at Caracol. Archaeologist are telling us that the glyphs mention the death of Lady Batz Ek, who is the Mother of Lord Kan II and this panel was very likely commissioned by him. It is believed that the panel was cut into several pieces and given away by Naranjo to its subordinate sites as gifts of that conquest. This included Xunantunich, which has forever shown alliance with Naranjo. Much more was found in front of the A9 structure. The panel was backfilled immediately, after everyone had viewed it, but plans are to make a replica that will be placed in the original location, and the original panel will be moved into the Visitor Center."

Just 7?  Yes, Cayo has culture galore.  Raphael Zoren wrote a good article about some of the activities and sights that Cayo has to see.  The Green Iguana Conservation Project, Xunantunich, Cahal Pech, and Caracol are all mentioned.  Tubing, horseback riding, and eating on Burns are covered.  There's some inaccuracies, and incorrect observations, but they can be attributed to not having spent enough time in Cayo.

"San Ignacio, Belize is a small lovely town located on the Cayo region of the country and mere minutes away from the border with Guatemala.

Considered as the heartland of the Belizean Mayan World, San Ignacio has its fair share of cultural and adventure attractions, even for those who travel with a tight budget...  The Cayo region of Belize has a beautiful countryside and the best way to explore it is by horse.  There are many routes you can take in order to enjoy horseback riding.  My favorite by far is the one that goes from San Ignacio all the way to the Mayan Ruins of Xunantunich."

Five Common Myths about Belize Busted

Five Common Myths about Belize Busted | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

These aren't the myths you're thinking.  This humorous article from the Huffington Post dispels some travel based myths.  Belize isn't an island, has great Mayan ruins, like Caracol pictured above, and surely isn't boring.  Where'd they come up with those myths, anyways?  Xunantunich and Chaa Creek are both given as myth busting examples, and they even have a funny video of Xunantunich, and of course they don't quite get the pronunciation correct.

"There is a unique pocket in the world that buzzes with warmth, inner peace and joy.  The people are peaceful, with a quiet confidence emanating from their eyes.  They smile broadly, and are filled with energetic laughter, friendly gazes and cozy hugs.  Welcome to Belize...

So scrap your preconceived ideas of this petite little country, smushed between Guatemala, Mexico and the Caribbean Sea.  Although part of Central America, both geographically and politically, it refuses to be part of its neighbors to the left.  Rather, Belize celebrates a diverse culture; in fact, they're known as the Central American melting pot.'

Tropic Air Starts New Cayo Flights

Tropic Air Starts New Cayo Flights | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Tropic Air starts their new flights to and from Cayo, using the newly paved Maya Flats airstrip, today.  There are 4 inbound and 4 outbound flights every day, and while 3 are to Belize City, there is one that goes to and from Placencia.

"Located in western Belize, San Ignacio serves as the capital of Cayo District.  It got its start from mahogany and chicle production in the Colonial era, but has gradually evolved into the center of commerce and tourism for western Belize.  Visit the area to see its many Maya sites (including Cahal Pech, Caracol, and Xunantunich), caves such as ATM, and other sites such as the Mountain Pine Ridge, Tapir Mountain Reserve and the Macal River.  Cayo is also home to many award winning resorts and nature programs (like the Green Iguana Project)."

10 Reasons Why You Should Visit Belize

10 Reasons Why You Should Visit Belize | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Not just another top 10 list on Belize.  This one was written by Cayo's Larry Waight, and while Cayo is conspicuously absent from the list - hopefully his next article is 100 things to do in Cayo - some of our Mayan archaeological sites are mentioned under the heading, Belize is the epicenter of the ancient Maya world.  Give the Huffington Post article a read when you get a chance.

"Archaeologists estimate that more than one million Maya lived in present day Belize and flourished during the Classic Period from 300 to 900 AD.  Maya temple sites like Caracol, Xunantunich, Altun Ha, Cahal Pech and Lamanai are just a few of the spectacular sites that can be discovered in Belize."
