The Belize Forest Department had its Youth Summer Camp last week, and it was here in Cayo at Sacred Heart College. Looks like the students had a lot of fun while learning about sustainability. They also got to visit the Green Iguana Conservation Project and Bulridge's acreage. Awesome to see.

'The Forest Department held its annual summer camp from July 10th-14th, 2023 under the theme “Healthy Forests for Healthy People”. '

How to Spend 5 Days in Belize for $500

How to Spend 5 Days in Belize for $500 | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

303 Magazine has an article out about budget travelling in Belize, and Cayo is highlighted.  Cenaida's gets a great mention, as does the Green Iguana Conservation Project, Mountain Pine Ridge, and Xunantunich.

"Tucked away in the jungle is the small city of San Ignacio. While there are tourists in San Ignacio due to its rich history and culture, it isn’t what you would call a “tourist town.” The center of town is a few streets of restaurants and businesses, all centered around a local food and goods marketplace.

A winding river snakes around the city, and just beyond is some of nature’s finest — jungle-thick hikes that lead to towering waterfalls, hot springs and pools. But the real gem of San Ignacio is its Mayan footprint. Ruins of ancient Mayan structures, caves filled with artifacts and other historic sites are scattered around the city. San Ignacio is where a traveler finds their sense of adventure."

"Located onsite at the San Ignacio Resort Hotel, the Green Iguana Conservation Project teaches kids about the animals in a highly interactive environment.  Founded to conserve and look after the endangered species, kids can pick up and hold the friendly lizards while being educated on the incubation, hatching, rearing and releasing process."

Fodor's Adventurous Cayo Vacation

Fodor's Adventurous Cayo Vacation | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Fodor's Travel has a travel article all about Cayo, entitled 'I Thought I Would Die Many Times on This Adventure Through Belize,' and it's definitely worth a read.  They saw quite a few different sites around Cayo, and they have great things to say about the San Ignacio Resort Hotel and Mountain Equestrian Trails.  They also loved the Green Iguana Conservation Project and Cahal Pech, of course.

"A trip to San Ignacio, Belize, isn’t just a vacation — it’s a heart-pounding escape.  I don’t necessarily consider myself an adventurer. At a young age, movies served as my adrenaline fix: beefy heroes jumped from ledges, confronted threatening wildlife, and uncovered mysterious secrets. I never considered I might one day come close to experiencing anything as remotely exciting.  But after having the opportunity to explore San Ignacio, Belize, go ahead and put me on the same page as the leading heroes of Hollywood. I didn’t quite fall into a pit of insects, face off against bandits, or escape the lair of a weird alien. But there were tarantulas! Dark, tight caves and ancient Mayan ruins!"

7 Cultural Attractions of San Ignacio

7 Cultural Attractions of San Ignacio | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Just 7?  Yes, Cayo has culture galore.  Raphael Zoren wrote a good article about some of the activities and sights that Cayo has to see.  The Green Iguana Conservation Project, Xunantunich, Cahal Pech, and Caracol are all mentioned.  Tubing, horseback riding, and eating on Burns are covered.  There's some inaccuracies, and incorrect observations, but they can be attributed to not having spent enough time in Cayo.

"San Ignacio, Belize is a small lovely town located on the Cayo region of the country and mere minutes away from the border with Guatemala.

Considered as the heartland of the Belizean Mayan World, San Ignacio has its fair share of cultural and adventure attractions, even for those who travel with a tight budget...  The Cayo region of Belize has a beautiful countryside and the best way to explore it is by horse.  There are many routes you can take in order to enjoy horseback riding.  My favorite by far is the one that goes from San Ignacio all the way to the Mayan Ruins of Xunantunich."

Amazing Adventures in Cayo

Amazing Adventures in Cayo | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Arran and Alison Bevis, from Mountain Equestrian Trails, were interviewed recently, and they had a lot to say about Cayo, and Belize.  Many of the great spots in Cayo are talked about in the interview, including Cahal Pech, Xunantunich, the Green Iguana Conservation Project, and MPR.

"I can take any of my kiddos here: both of these places are easily accessible with small children.  At Rio On, there’s a variety of depths of water and many natural pools to choose from, so it’s great for swimming with the kids and sliding down the waterfalls.  The enormous Rio Frio Cave, with its huge, impressive entrance, is also a great attraction for all ages, perfect for some spooky exploration, and easy to get in-and-out-of."

SIRH: Luxury and Hospitality at its Best

SIRH: Luxury and Hospitality at its Best | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

The San Ignacio Resort Hotel just got a superb review from the Ambergris Today.  It highlights the beauty of the hotel, and the quality and teamwork of its staff.  It's obvious why they won the Belize Tourism Board's 'Hotel of the Year' award.  Humberto and the Green Iguana Conservation Project get praise too, of course.  Jose Luis Zapata got some great pictures.

"Nestled in the heart of the Cayo District you will find one of Belize’s oldest and finest premier resort, The San Ignacio Resort Hotel. This resort boasts first class amenities and accommodations for locals and international visitors seeking to relax or explore our beautiful Belize.  Upon our arrival at the hotel we were greeted with the warmest of smiles from of one the friendliest front desk receptionist, Amaris Wakefield; she immediately made us feel at home...

A huge part that makes your stay at the resort is the staff’s professional and friendly service.  Through the very enlightening encounters with their staff you can learn how knowledgeable Humberto Requena is about the Green Iguana Project (you get big smiles from him all the time), how attentive to details and serviceable waiter/bartender Ragner Smith and Food & Beverage Manager Fiona Rudon are, how Daryll Leslie from maintenance is willing to help out any of his coworkers and even the guests in anything possible and how Head Chef of the Running W Restaurant Estella Vellicillo has over 13 years experience in the culinary field."

Jenny Phung's curator insight, October 7, 2014 12:25 AM

With only 24 rooms in the hotel, including a master suite, regal rooms, deluxe balcony and garden view rooms, spa suite and also the pool with the view of lush rainforest, San Ignacio Resort Hotel attracts the customers by their professional and friendly staffs that bring the perfectly services in each rooms. The staffs work and treat each other like a family so they have created a friendly working environment. More than that, the rooms are always bright by coloured painting of local artists and each room provide the private balcony with the overlooking pool and jungle canopy and full of amenities like cable television, telephone, wifi, ceiling fan, air conditioning, in room safe, spacious walk in shower and hair dryer. Moreover, the hotel also makes their customers feel like home by the personalized letters to welcome and detailed gift for each night of their stay. The staffs always have the interaction with the customers and in charge of keeping the room perfectly clean. Furthermore, the San Ignacio Resort and Hotel also has hosted many graduations, weddings, concerts, and parties and offered the educational tour which helped the students understand the importance of protection and conservation of the green iguanas. This resort and hotel is recommend by the previous customers.

Iguanas and Termites at the SIRH

Iguanas and Termites at the SIRH | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

The San Pedro Scoop came to Cayo to see the iguanas at the Green Iguana Conservation Project at the SIRH.  They loved it, of course.

"Though you might not know it by just driving by, the San Ignacio Hotel Resort sits on quite a few acres of really beautiful jungle leading down to the Macal River. There are plenty of trails but you are going to want to get one of the hotel guides to lead you a 3 minute walk to the Green Iguana Project...

A very cool program initiated by the hotel to educate guests, Belizeans and especially children about this native animal and how they (especially the 'shes') need to be protected in the wild.  Green iguanas are purely vegetarian (unlike the more common 'Wish Willys' on Ambergris Caye) and considered good eats in Belize…they are often referred to as 'Bamboo Chicken'."

Belize Beyond the Beach

Belize Beyond the Beach | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Cayo was listed as one of the 2020 Travel Hot Spots by Ali Wunderman, author of Frommer's Guide to Belize.  Frommer's is one of the better guide books for Belize, and offers lots of great information about the tours, lodges, and cultural hot spots around Cayo.  Chaa Creek, Parrot's Nest, Soul Project, and other spots are highlighted.  Ali was recently interviewed by Javier on the Belize Travelcast.

"Cayo District (Western Belize): The Cayo District is the heart of Belize's Mayan world, as well as its prime ecotourism destination. Between a full plate of active adventure activities and a steady diet of Mayan ruins and ancient burial caves, families will find this a great place to spend time in Belize. The Lodge at Chaa Creek is not only extremely comfortable for families, but they also have their own butterfly breeding project and natural history museum on-site. And if parents need a little pampering, they also have an excellent spa. For families on a budget, we highly recommend the Parrot's Nest which offers free river tubing, treehouse stays and much more family-friendly fun...

Try rappelling into a sinkhole or riding horses to visit a Mayan ruin. And if you like zip-lines, this country has you covered.

Belize’s interior (which, by the way, is less than two hours from the coast/airport, so there’s no logistical reason to skip it), is also where the country’s youth are developing art and culture in a new way. In San Ignacio, the twice-weekly Soul Project (housed beneath The Old House Hostel) showcases live music and rotating installations created by young, local artists, while the San Ignacio Resort Hotel merges hospitality and stewardship with the Green Iguana Conservation Project.

Belize: Beaches, Adventure and History

Belize: Beaches, Adventure and History | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Travel Weekly highlighted Belize in its latest article, and Cayo, of course, gets most of the story's focus.  The San Ignacio Resort Hotel, Ka'ana, and Gaia Riverlodge are all mentioned as great lodging options.

While ATM is somehow not mentioned, the Black Hole Drop, Actun Loch Tunich, is, as is the Green Iguana Conservation Project.  Caracol, Xunantunich(Hanna Stables gets a shout out in regards to getting there), and Cahal Pech, some of Belize's nicest Maya archaeological sites, are recommended.

"Neatly wedged between Mexico, Guatemala and the Caribbean Sea, don’t let its size fool you – there’s plenty here for a standalone holiday. Its Mayan experience is at the heart of it all, predominantly in the western Cayo District, home to the unassuming capital Belmopan, aka the ‘Garden City’ thanks to surrounding waterfalls, caves and rivers that are ideal for hiking, birdwatching and soft adventure.

The tourist hub, though, is San Ignacio, a small town of lively local bars and restaurants, and a good base for Caracol, Belize’s most impressive Mayan city; Cahal Pech, the oldest known site in the Belize River Valley; and the temples of Xunantunich, where a new tomb was discovered in 2016. Hanna Stables offer horse-riding tours here, including a quirky ferry crossing with horses in tow.

Cayo District is home to the Actun Loch Tunich cave, where a hike and abseil take you 300 feet down into Central America’s largest cave system."

Gomez, the iguana ambassador for Cayo, and Belize, has sadly passed away.  He was the alpha male of the Iguana Hatchery for 16 years.  The San Ignacio Resort Hotel is renaming their scholarship to the Gomez Scholarship Fund in his honor.

"It is with great sadness the San Ignacio Resort Hotel announces the death of our beloved alpha male Gomez from the Green Iguana Conservation Project.  For 16 years, Gomez had been the Star of the educational program and interacted with an approximate of 50,000 visitors from across the globe—instilling admiration in many, turning emotions from fear and hatred to appreciation and care."

"Located in western Belize, San Ignacio serves as the capital of Cayo District.  It got its start from mahogany and chicle production in the Colonial era, but has gradually evolved into the center of commerce and tourism for western Belize.  Visit the area to see its many Maya sites (including Cahal Pech, Caracol, and Xunantunich), caves such as ATM, and other sites such as the Mountain Pine Ridge, Tapir Mountain Reserve and the Macal River.  Cayo is also home to many award winning resorts and nature programs (like the Green Iguana Project)."

A Virtual Tour of the SIRH

A Virtual Tour of the SIRH | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

The San Pedro Scoop visited Cayo, and had the chance to stay at the San Ignacio Resort Hotel.  Of course, they had only great things to say about their experience there, and they put together a virtual tour of the hotel.  Worth a read.

"A few days ago, I wrote about eating termites and visiting green iguanas at the conservation project at the San Ignacio Hotel in San Ignacio, Cayo, Belize.  But I didn’t just go for the wildlife, though I’ll admit…it was pretty good.  I stayed the night at the hotel and was pretty impressed.  Very nice digs.  Let me show you around…  The hotel is just up the hill from San Ignacio town proper, an easy walk.  And the lobby is quite grand...

Pluses of the hotel: Other than everything I listed above, a great restaurant, the staff, the beautiful pool, the awesome Iguana Project and the beautiful grounds overlooking the Macal River…location is a huge plus for this hotel.  Many visit the Cayo district and stay in the lodges that are a bit off the beaten path for the true jungle experience.  If you are the type that wants to easily access different bars, restaurants, shops and nightlife on your stay, this hotel is perfect.  The town of San Ignacio is a few minute walk down the hill."
