The Belmopan Humane Society had their open house this weekend to celebrate 12 years of operation.  They had some happy people, and pets.

"Saturday, April 20, BHS hosted an 'Open House' to celebrate 12 years of helping animals, the people that surround them, the creation of a wonderful Resource Center and the beginning stages of a Community Animal Health Care clinic.  Behind the Scenes supporters donated toward the printing of over 1,000 revised BHS brochures, as many invitations, and all the color photos for our many displays.  This allowed us to place brochures and invitations in the 695 PO boxes in Belmopan.  Hundreds of flyers were spread through the city along with ads on Love FM, Channel 5 bulletin board and CCV cable TV.  Emails and text invitations to the many people that BHS has helped in one way or another were sent."

Belize Launches Jasmine Alert

Belize Launches Jasmine Alert | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

There is a new early alert for kidnapping victims in Belize.  The Jasmine Alert, which can quickly mobilize everyone with a phone to help look for any abducted child.  Great news!

"If a child is kidnapped anywhere in the country and somebody sees it and calls 911 - the police will get notified.  They will immediately call the national coordinator who is Inspector Ms. Augustine who will decide if the report meets the criteria of a Jasmine Alert.  If it does, she will immediately advise both telecommunications companies (SMART & BTL) and the media that there was an abduction.  Ms. Augustine will send out a text type material that will be put out by both SMART and BTL.  The media starts to broadcast that across the nation so that everyone can be looking for the vehicle or the individual that performed the crime."

Earth Day celebrated at UB in recycled style

Earth Day celebrated at UB in recycled style | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Channel 5 has a good write up on UB's Earth Day Fair. The theme was, "A New Wave of Green Energy."  They interview Joaquin Magana, the coordinator of the event.

"Earth day is celebrated here at the university, it’s an annual event and this is the sixth annual event that we are celebrating.  The concept is about, this year, is about trying to move from fossil fuels and to use alternative energy.  So that is why as you can see our theme is a new wave of green energy.  Fossil fuels on the longer run is having a great impact on us in terms of global warming and global climate changes will affect us directly, particularly Belize City because global warming caused by the increase of carbon dioxide which is one of the gases that is emitted from burning of fossil fuels and this will cause increase in temperatures, the polls will melt and then the sea level is expected to rise.  Belize City runs the risk of being under water."

The Pandy Show is a 'giant in television'

The Pandy Show is a 'giant in television' | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

It's great to see The Pandy Show getting some national attention.

"You won’t find him on the Disney Channel or the Cartoon Network…and he’s yet to make it on Channel Five.  But that doesn’t stop Kent Pandy from being a giant in television…at least on Cayo’s S.E.N. TV.  News Five cameraman Brent Toombs spent an evening with the one man network at his studios high atop Cahal Pech."

Channel 5 interviews Kent Pandy.

"Originating from a make shift studio, on a hill overlooking San Ignacio, the Pandy Show hardly compares with other TV shows produced for children. There are no elaborate sets. There is no studio audience. And technically speaking, the broadcast is less than perfect. But still, the program is a huge hit with youngsters in the Cayo district for one reason; Kent Pandy. A man with enough enthusiasm, and heart, to pull off a weekly live television show entirely by himself."

Fuego's Birthday on Tapir Day

Fuego's Birthday on Tapir Day | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

The Belize Zoo celebrated World Tapir Day with a birthday celebration for Fuego.  He even got some birthday cake especially for him.  It was another great event at the Belize Zoo.  Ya'axche has some great pictures from the event, and Channel 5 got some video and did some interviews.

"Another smashingly successful National Tapir Day at the Zoo!  Over 250 guests from all over the country joined us to celebrate our national animal, the 'Mountain Cow.'  Excitement and energy were high, especially when Belize's new tapir ambassador, 'Fuego,' finally had his first birthday fiesta!  Students bravely addressed the crowd and shared why tapirs were important to them and their country.

The young, talented musicians from Panerrifix Steelband kept us entertained with steelband melodies, followed by an enthusiastic sing-along session by the entire party crowd, lead by TBZ Director, Sharon Matola.  While students had their refreshments and played clever tapir games, Fuego munched away on his splendid birthday cake made of sweet potatoes, carrots, honey, and all the things a young, growing tapir loves to eat!  TBZ thanks all our special guests that made this day extra special.  Here's to another 30 years of magical mountain cow events."

It was an amazing first home game for the Western Ballaz.  They kept their number 1 spot by defeating the Dangriga Warriors 63 - 52 in a high energy match that was close for much of the game.  The Sacred Heart College auditorium was packed to capacity with all their Cayo fans cheering them on.  The first game between SHC and SHJC went back and forth many times, with SHJC winning by 1 point.  Mayor John August was in attendance and gave the inauguration speech, and Javier Gutierrez did a spectacular job as MC.  Next week, the team travels to San Pedro to play the Tiger Sharks.

Western Ballaz Play Tomorrow

Western Ballaz Play Tomorrow | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

The Western Ballaz host the Dangriga Warriors tomorrow at the SHC auditorium.  The warm up game is SHC vs. SHJC.  This is their first home game so come on out and support the number 1 ranked team in the Elite League.  The game will be televised on channel 5.  The video is channel 5's highlights from last week's game, where they defeated the Running Rebels in Orange Walk.

"Tip off found Kurt Burgess of Ballaz and Ian Carcamo of OW facing off- Burgess taps to Mark O’brien and we’re underway.  Leith Paulino powers the home team to a 12 – 8 lead with this good looking three point shot and he would finish with 11 points and 6 rebounds.  However, Kurt Burgess who came in as the assist leader in the league with 8, banks this triple off the glass to pull his team to a 16 – 13 lead at the end of the 1st quarter."

April the Tapir Celebrates 30 Years | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

World Tapir Day was this weekend, and the Belize Zoo crowned April the Tapir - ceremonially they crowned her paper mache double - as the new Miss Belize in honor of her 30th birthday.  The yearly event at the zoo was attended by 100's of students from around Belize, and the ceremonial crowning was done by four students from the Buena Vista school in Spanish Lookout.  April is the oldest living tapir in a zoo, already having outlived her life expectantcy by 5 years, in the world.  Happy birthday, April!

"To many of you watching this, the news that a new Miss Belize was crowned today will come as a big surprise.  The venue was the Belize Zoo and Education Center and the occasion was a very special one – the thirtieth birthday of a celebrity who over the years has become the face of the zoo.  Today News Five was invited to the birthday celebration of April the Tapir, and joined the many friends and guests there for what is always a memorable event."

Lucky Boy's New Habitat

Lucky Boy's New Habitat | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it
Lucky Boy is fully recovered, and now has his own habitat at the Belize Zoo. It was officially open to the public yesterday. Channel 5 went to the pre-party to see the new habitat, along with the new visitor's center
and the trails that have been modified for handicapped access. They also released a new book, 'Words of Wisdom from Happy the Owl.' Happy 30th birthday to the Belize Zoo!

"At the Belize Zoo, Lucky Boy met the media today. On the previous occasion when we reported on the black jaguar, he was severely malnourished after months of neglect while in captivity. Well Lucky Boy has made a remarkable recovery and today, he showed off his new fur as he well as his new habitat. News Five’s Delahnie Bain reports on the comeback kid and other projects that are making the zoo more user-friendly and comfortable to visitors."

60 Scholarships Get Funded

60 Scholarships Get Funded | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Feelgood story of the week!  The BNE Charitable Trust has teamed up with Restore Belize, and provided $400,000 towards scholarships to high school.  Thanks!

"But there’s some good news; sixty students are getting a shot at a secondary education through a partnership of Restore Belize and the B.N.E. Charitable Trust.  The students will be a part of the 'I am Belize' Scholarship Program and by extension will get internship and mentorship opportunities.  Last week, B.N.E. Trust handed over a four hundred thousand dollar cheque for investment in the students’ education, beginning this academic year."

Jacob Pavek's curator insight, March 20, 2013 10:56 AM

My thoughts:

I think this is an excellent program for supporting high school students educationally and financially. The program requires that kids maintain certain educational progress, participate in their school's scholarship club, and set up a savings account to help start financial security for the future. This program gives kids money to help pay for the many expenses of schooling and helps them become financially secure for the future. More companies should sponser programs such as this one that encourages educational and financial success for kids in the future. The 60 kids who are selected are lucky to gain scholarship money, additional scholarship opportunities, and to jump-start their future financial security.

Have you tried all the homemade jams and jellies at the market?  They also have homemade hot sauces too.  And they're hot!  On market Saturday, you can find those, and a wide selection of homemade wines.  Cassava, Cashew, Rice, Carrot, Papaya, Mango, and many more flavors.

"In the west, an agro-processing facility is providing alternative income for a group of women.  The project started on a small scale, but today the production of jams and juices from locally grown fruits has grown considerably, attracting support from the Food and Agriculture Organization."

April's Birthday Bash at the Belize Zoo

April's Birthday Bash at the Belize Zoo | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

April the Tapir had a great 29th birthday yesterday!  It was World Tapir Day, and they celebrated in style.  There was even a skydiver.  Channel 5 was there, and they interviewed Sharon Matola, the founding director of the Belize Zoo.

"She had to have more than one cake because there are so many kids.  As I mentioned earlier, her first birthday party was when she was two and five kids showed up and now its hundreds.  So we can’t just give her one big cake because it will disappoint so many children so we had to get a special four cakes made of horse chow, honey, cucumbers, flowers; all the things that a mountain cow likes to eat is in the cake and it’s soft so she doesn’t have to worry about chewing it.  I am sure she is a very happy tapir right now."

Belizean making waves in Caribbean Fashion Design Competition | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Rebecca Stirm, from Roaring Creek, is representing Belize in Mission Catwalk, a reality series that has designers from all over the Caribbean competing for a chance to show their designs during the London Fashion Week.  Rebecca has dazzled the judges so far, and won episode 2's competition, where she had a make a cultural piece, by creating a Mayan and Mestizo inspired dress.  She has already been invited to Caribbean Fashion Week.

We wish Rebecca the best of luck, although, luck has nothing to do with it.  If you'd like to help sponsor her for Caribbean Fashion Week, you can email her at rebeccastirm@gmail.com.  Rebecca is currently back in Belize, getting ready for the next competition, and she gave an interview to Channel 5.

“Oh my goodness, well at first when they took us to the Hope Gardens I was thinking that they would make us make something out of leaves; we’re all like freaking out. But when they walked out in those nightgowns, oh god, and then when they told us thirty minutes, oh god. That was stress and then like I didn’t get any trimmings or anything. I just had the scissors and the needle and just started cutting. It was rush, like as you started thirty minutes was done. It was so fast; everyone was worried about getting eliminated that day.”
