Cayo International Film Festival

Cayo International Film Festival | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

The Cayo Film Festival was this weekend, and it was another impressive cultural event at the Cayo Welcome Center.  They screened the documentaries from the Belize Documentary Film Field Course, along with Kurse a di Ixtabi, it's documentary, Creative Kaos, and many more.

"Check this out!  First ever CAYO FILM Festival.  Great job Daniel Velazquez!  Short films from Richard and Carol Farneti Foster and Ilana Lapid's NMSU's Creative Media students are being shown - as well as other films like Charles Britt and Roni Martinez' Scarlet Six project, Isabelle Paquet-Durand's wildlife medicine clinic, and Matt's feature-length "Curse of the Ixtabi".  So...incredibly...cool. The Last Shaman

The Last Shaman | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

The Last Shaman is a documentary about Lucas Medina, who resides, and has a medicinal trail, in Bullet Tree Falls.  NMSU film students Alejandro Horcasitas and Neil Duran shot and edited the film while there were here last Summer.  You get a good feel for Bullet Tree in the video, as well as seeing some of the sights and the Mopan river.  It's cool how he gives thanks to the late Don Beto Cocom for teaching him all about medicinal plants, causing the culture to continue for future generations.  Well worth a watch.

Green Iguana Conservation Project Documentary

Matthew Valdovinos, one of the NMSU film school students that did the Belize study abroad documentary film course, has released the documentary about the Green Iguana Conservation Project.  It starts out with Humberto Requena and Eddy Estrada defining what the project does.  Interesting fact: the San Ignacio Resort Hotel has been able to raise the survival rate from around 6% to around 60% in the hatchery.

Daniel Velazquez, one of the cofounders of the project explains how the project is sustainable, so it will stand the test of time, and shows some footage from the project in 1999.  The documentary also has interviews with Miriam Roberson and the Belize Wildlife Referral Clinic's Dr. Isabelle Paquet Durand,  and if you ever wanted to know how to clean an iguana, you can learn it by watching.  This video is well worth the watch.

NMSU Film Course Reflections

NMSU Film Course Reflections | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Daniel Velazquez created a short video documenting the New Mexico State University film students and their interaction with people and nature around Cayo and Belize during their documentary film course.  They shot a lot, and learned a lot.  It's a well done, feelgood video, and you'll see some faces you know from around Cayo.

UFL Spring Break with BWRC

It was called the 'Wild Spring Break in Belize,' and it was a unique educational experience for the University of Florida students.  They got to tour the Belize Zoo, stay at the Tropical Education Center, see iguanas at the Green Iguana Conservation Project, Howler monkeys at the Community Baboon Sanctuary, and work with animals at the Belize Wildlife Referral Clinic.  Daniel Velazquez' documentary on their visit is spectacular.

NMSU also did a trip down, and the video is on fb.

"Uflorida Wild-Spring-Break in Belize 2014 - Thanks to Daniel Velasquez for another great video.  Thanks to BWRCs great teaching crew with Drs. Sonia, Fidu and Zoltan as well as assistants Dairy and Jaz and support crew with Mike, Sam and Justin.  And last but not least thanks to Victoria Bender for coordinating and of course thanks to the students for being one of the best groups ever!  Best of luck for your continued careers and we hope to hear from you again.  Dr. I"

Rastas in Cayo Documentary

Aaron Gatlin, one of the NMSU film students, has released his documentary, and while it's called 'Rastas in Belize,' it focuses on 3 Rastas in Cayo.  The recently departed Ras Far I is in it, and he describes the Ital diet, and takes the documentary from Burns avenue to the Saturday market.

Carlton and Barbara, from Back to My Roots,  are featured in the documentary too, and Carlton explains how they put love, heart, and soul into their business model.  Ras A, the bushman, finishes the documentary by explaining life and farming in the bush.  Another great documentary.  Well done, Aaron!
