I got to wondering about Japan’s place in the marketing of these products. The country was a major producer of salt and pepper shakers by the 1940s, and many of them were made in the stereotypical images of African Americans that was omnipresent in this country.

According to Howard Dodson, director of the New York Public Library’s Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, “There are two kinds of collectors of black Americana: those who are interested in collecting as a financial investment and those with a passion for finding ‘the missing pages of history.’” ...There is also some concern that part of the drive in purchasing black Americana is pimpin’ black culture.: that this adoption of old images and negative stereotypes is being glamorized in a perverse way. Like hip-hop’s bad ‘rap’ (pun intended), collecting black Americana is sweeping the nation in a concerning way.

I used to have a print in this style. Must have been the same artist. I don't remember what the picture was now. Might have been a kid praying, that comes to mind. I never knew who created it.

The watermelon prices are excellent. I'd take a dozen. As for the English, how many men online have you had send you something equally bad or worse? I don't ask them what colour they are, I just don't answer.

The bigger issue about racism isn't this card it's all the other cards which show white people exclusively. I feel bad for multicultural families who would like to have Valentines to send with something other than the typical white kids. You can't change the vintage Valentines but if you look in stores right now... where are the other cultures represented? All I see are cartoons, movies and etc being promoted. I don't see any Valentines I'd actually think were meant for a kid to take to school and distribute to his or her classroom.
