Hashtags can be a powerful communication tool for businesses. Rupert Staines, European MD at RadiumOne offers seven best practice tips on getting them right.

The social media boom showed no signs of relenting last year and with that exponential growth came the wider use of hashtags by businesses and consumers. In fact the American Dialect Society crowned ‘hashtag’ as the word of the year and the French government’s General Commission for Terminology and Neology have issued a recommendation that French social media users should shun the term in favour of a French alternative due to how widely used it has become in the country. Whichever way you look at it, the hashtag revolution is certainly causing quite a stir globally and has become one of the most popular and recognisable phrases – with one couple even naming their child Hashtag. Although I wouldn’t recommend this, hashtags are clearly worth keeping on top of, so here are some tips to help marketers effectively use them to benefit their business

Gamification is taking the world by storm. It’s been a mainstay of Facebook’s revenue strategy for years now as users make candy creations in Candy Crush Saga and take care of livestock in the hit game FarmVille 2. All Social Media Marketing Strategies Are Not the Same

All Social Media Marketing Strategies Are Not the Same | Digital Marketing Power | Scoop.it

The strategy of a Social Media campaign is different for a company with several thousand employees and a national audience than it is for a small local business. While the local business works to attract people from a limited area, large companies must think on a more global scale. The local business may rely on personal networking via referral groups, Chambers of Commerce and community organizations. Participation in social sites is often confined to a smaller audience of followers, who tend to live and work in the same geographic area. (However, as businesses grow, they may consider expanding their service area or even looking for online sales opportunities. Their participation in online social sites can act as a springboard to find a larger customer pool.) While national and international companies may use Social Media Marketing for the same purpose as smaller companies – to build relationships and obtain referrals – their overall strategy will not be the same. The business owner or operating officers may have no personal involvement in the Social Media Campaign or be involved in local face-to-face referral networks.

And, unfortunately, traditional marketing metrics still focus doggedly on cash generated per £1 spent. Old school thinking.

One of the most amazing things to consider when discussing social media marketing ROI is the sheer variety and volume of different types of ROI based on activities undertaken via social media engagement and blog marketing. This article outlines the ROI factors.
