Service Industries now Training Human Employees in Robotics & Automation

Service Industries now Training Human Employees in Robotics & Automation | Internet of Things - Technology focus | Scoop.it
Robotics & Automation have already been fully embraced and developed in the industrial world. Now companies in service industries have the opportunity to learn how robots and automation can help them.

Via TechinBiz
Richard Platt's insight:

According to the International Federation of Robotics (IFR), 2013 saw the highest number of industrial robots ever sold, with a total of 1.6 million units worth an estimated $10 billion.  According to the IFR, double-digit growth will continue through the end of this decade with more and more countries adopting robots and automation. According to IFR:

  • Global competition requires modernization of production facilities.
  • Energy-efficiency and new materials, e.g. carbon-composites, require retooling of production.
  • Human-machine collaboration will open up new applications and attract new customers.
  • Growing consumer markets require expansion of production capacities.
  • Decline in products’ life-cycle and increase in the variety of products require flexible automation.
  • Technical improvements of industrial robots will increase the use of robots in the general industry and in small and medium-sized companies, e.g. user-friendly robots, uncomplicated, and low-priced robots for simple applications.
  • Improved quality requires sophisticated, high-tech robot systems.
  • Robots improve the quality of work by taking over dangerous, tedious, and dirty jobs that are not possible or safe for humans to perform.

Samsung Set To Unveil New Chips To Power IoT

Samsung Set To Unveil New Chips To Power IoT | Internet of Things - Technology focus | Scoop.it
The Artik system-on-a-chip series will make it easier for even small-fry developers to power the next wave of smart gadgets.

Via Ensil
Richard Platt's insight:

Samsung has officially said that Chief Strategy Officer Young Sohn will “reveal a major company milestone that will enable the new wave of groundbreaking Internet of Things devices and services.”  -  A system on a chip (or SoC) integrates all the key components of a mobile computer onto a single chip, including memory, sensors, accelerometer and gyroscope, and crucially, radio frequency functions.  -  Samsung’s best-known system-on-a-chip is the Exynos, a powerful ARM-based chip found primarily in Samsung’s Galaxy line of smartphones. An earlier SoC from Samsung also powered Apple’s first iPhone in 2007.  -  The Artik SoC is different because it’s aimed at a range of hardware developers both large and small, not just big clients like Apple or Samsung’s own mobile division.  -  Samsung has previously pledged to make all of its electronic gadgets and appliances connected by 2020, and the Artik system on a chip series will play a key role in making that happen.

Ensil's curator insight, May 12, 2015 11:34 AM

Samsung continues to make bold tech and R&D moves as its smartphone profits fluctuate, moving further now into the Internet of Things space.

New device allows brain to Bypass Spinal Cord, move Paralyzed Limbs

New device allows brain to Bypass Spinal Cord, move Paralyzed Limbs | Internet of Things - Technology focus | Scoop.it
For the first time ever, a paralyzed man can move his fingers and hand with his own thoughts thanks to a new device. A 23-year-old quadriplegic is the first patient to use Neurobridge, an electronic neural bypass for spinal cord injuries that reconnects the brain directly to muscles, allowing voluntary and functional control of a paralyzed limb.

Via TechinBiz
Glenn Hogan's curator insight, March 26, 2015 6:24 PM

This is a very important breakthrough in help people with paralysing injuries, to think that some of these people may yet again regain the use of their limbs through the use of this new technology and live more productive lives.

Peter Hughes's curator insight, March 27, 2015 1:41 AM

Medical research has come a very long way in the past years, and the fact that it is now possible to artificially link the brain to one's limbs is almost unbelievable. If research continues at this rate, we may soon be seeing realistic artificial limbs, and possibly even some vast improvements to artificial sight technologies.
