SHARING is a key part of this web social economy we are living in right now. It started with content, (message boards, blogs) and now has moved on to cars (Zipcar), bikes (Citi Bike) and beds (AirBnB).

We are becoming more connected than ever before and OUR online profiles, that WE and OTHERS create about US is driving this sharing economy.

Marty, I know you and I have never met in person but via Scoop.it and social sharing we are connected. Interesting how business is changing.

Martin (Marty) Smith's comment, May 5, 2013 7:29 PM
Agree Brian. When SHARING is at the core many things change such as: competition, how we scale, how we make money and how and what we support.

In a social sharing time we compete in a more collaborative way where rising tides lift all boats. I was shocked to be in a meeting the other day where someone was pithing the idea of unilateral zero sum benefit. Shocked because everyone I work with get it - that doing the right thing is increasingly the right thing to do. I wasn't going to convince this particular manager that WE are stronger than I or ME, but most of us are getting it and that is one of the things driving Scoop.it's success :).M

6 Top eCommerce Solutions Rated By @Scenttrail & Shared By @moblized

6 Top eCommerce Solutions Rated By @Scenttrail & Shared By @moblized | Information Technology & Social Media News | Scoop.it

How do you build a website and marketplace to sell your products and services? Here are the 5 Best Companies for creating an eCommerce platform and marketplace.

Scenttrail Ratings
We've built stores with three of these five recommendations. Each has its good points and bad. Each is perfect for some and not so good for others. Here are our ratings:

ShopLocket
They don't mention this option, but we love the idea of being able to add a shopping cart to any piece of content without paying a big hosting operation like the 5 mentioned. If your ecommerce needs are small and located in social take a look at https://www.shoplocket.com/ .

Caveat
When you are camped on someone's ground THEY will always gain more benefit than you. The chance of a Shopify store outranking Shopify.com is zero. This issue is only a big deal for stores greater than 50,000 Stock Keeping Units and/or greater than $10M in sales. If you think you will eventually sell $10M+ you may want to create your own store / site. If you think it will take 10 years to reach $10M Shopify may be your best bet for ROI and speed. The PAIN comes when you transfer OFF of their platform, but we can discuss that at another time.

Shopify
Would be our first choice for most small to medium sized ecommerce implementations. The UI is clean and easy to understand. You can be up and running on Shopify in a matter of days. Inventory load is always the biggest pain and they have some ways around that.

Big Commerce
Sounds like Big Commerce fills the promotional hole we felt with Shopify. Most websites aren't very sophisticated in their coupons and promotions. If you are you will find Shopify limiting. Sounds like Big Commerce stepped in to fix the issue. And it can be a big issue since cross talk between offers and coupons can cause a train wreck. If you are sophisticated enough to make free shipping, % off and BOGO offers you may want to use Big Commerce.

Volusion
I wasn't wild about Volusion, but can't remember why. The security stuff the review mentions is marginally important. If you need highly secure ecommerce maybe they are better, but their inner-workings didn't seem as friendly as Shopify or as promotional savvy as Big Commerce.

Magento GO
I built our Story of Cancer store (now down) on Go and was impressed with the powerful business rules they include. Less than 10% of ecommerce sites need such power, but if you do Magento Go is probably your best bet. This is the power to say on a rainy Wednesday you want the price on yellow tops to be down10% when pared with shoes A, B or C. The cross-sale and up-sale wigets are powerful. The promotion, free shipping and coupons are powerful (once you figure out the convoluted logic and that problem is endemic).

Presta Shop
I don't know this option and am suspicious of FREE. Free is a risk because things go BUMP in the night on ecom sites. If you aren't a techie or don't have a techie working for you its good to have someone to call or email in an emergency like if you are bleeding personal information all over the web (say for an example lol). My concern here would be can the code keep up with needed changes (since how do they make money) and is it secure since security thanks to crazed hackers can be a real moveable feast (and I only meant "crazed hackers" in the nicest of ways so to do or say otherwise risks a "just because" attack, you know the attacks they launch just because they can).

Slideshare The Visual Marketing SEO RPG - NEW @Scoopit BLOW IT UP Study

Slideshare The Visual Marketing SEO RPG - NEW @Scoopit BLOW IT UP Study | Information Technology & Social Media News | Scoop.it

Scoop.it Study
I've often thought Slideshare was the great underutilized weapon of content marketing. Thinking that and having the data to prove are two different things.

Thanks to the team at Scoop.it we now have the data to prove what I've FELT. In an extensive study the Scoop.it team shifted my thinking on Slideshare.

Always knew Slideshare was POWERFUL SEO VooDoo because I've had several decks BLOW UP such as:

http://www.slideshare.net/martinmartysmith/storytelling-new-seo
Absolute #1 position on "Storytelling is the new SEO" and has been top ranked for over a year.

http://www.slideshare.net/martinsellingzoe/content-marketing-network
This deck held on for a year and has slide out of ranking now.

You don't get much more SEO competitive than "Storytelling is the New SEO" and "Content Marketing Network so personal validation supports the Scoop.it team's great work here.

The other paradigm they shifted for me today was thinking of Slideshare as an important "visual marketing" tool. Decks are LEAN, FAST and VIRAL so great ways to share and build authority and traffic. Just wish I could get my Slideshare profile styled better. Anyone know the secret sauce for that?

Great work Scoopiteers!

'Layering' Is The New SEO

'Layering' Is The New SEO | Information Technology & Social Media News | Scoop.it
Search Engine Optimization or SEO is no longer what it was a couple of years back. Now, an SEO specialist needs to widen his skill-set to survive in his profession, and shift towards Search Marketing Integration or SMI.

Via Martin (Marty) Smith
Martin (Marty) Smith's curator insight, December 30, 2013 11:24 PM

Have you noticed a trend toward calling everything the "new SEO"? I'm guilty too with my Storytelling Is The New SEO deck on Slideshare (http://www.slideshare.net/martinmartysmith/storytelling-new-seo ). We are wrestling with what the absence of so much busy work creates.

I agree with this well written statement about the "new SEO":

"Search Marketing Integration merges the world of marketing with keyword themes and link building to get soaring organic visibility and better ROI. SMI is all about effective use of cross-departmental initiatives. In short, success in an SEO campaign will no longer come from the irrelevant and redundant tactics. The caliber to integrate SEO with the marketing initiatives (branding, press releases, events, products, etc.) of an organization will measure true SEO success."

Not sure about the "soaring" part, but I know any website I manage makes more money with a Phil Buckley or a Bill Ross along for discussions about "blue oceans", keywords and content.

Phil never loved the busywork anyway. Now he, and his fellow SEO experts have more time for thinking BIG PICTURE and helping to create content strategies, new Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), strategies and tactics that can WIN and WIN FAST in this new "social shares rule all" post SEO Is Dead world.

Agnipravo Sengupta's comment, January 1, 2014 12:38 AM
I read an interview of Rand Fishkin where he pointed out that SEO should not remain as an independent sector. It should play a greater role by taking active part in every other sectors of an organization and act as a "layer" over them.

Why Content Gets Shared
Turns out our gut instincts about content marketing are correct. The TOOLS we use and the content we curate and create make a difference in the amount and velocity of our social shares.

Tools such as Scoop.it and your blog are indispensible say the results from a 30 day in depth view of @ScentTrail mentions on Topsy. Type of content also matters.

Infographics, SEO and my trusty ScentTrail Daily Paper.li generate the most mentions. Friends also matter.

#4 on the mentions list is group tweets from friends with thanks or best wishes for the weekend. Staying connected and sharing are critical to successful content marketing.

Interesting bottom line is a confirmation of what all content marketers know to be true. Confirmation of the fact that content gets shared is in the numbers. I don't curate or create 30 pieces of content a day (well not on most days lol) and I've certainly NEVER created 66 (most mentions in a single day in this study.

These numbers confirm what we know - content gets shared and explains what types of content is most likely to generate shares and what tools to use to promote shares.

Brian Yanish - MarketingHits.com's curator insight, July 12, 2013 11:34 PM

Marty thanks for sharing this study. In the world of online social sharing we need to rethink of the role as content providers.

My thoughts on how old content media producers need to evolve.

Interesting to see how newspapers, tv and radio are starting to figure out the "value added" model of internet marketing.  People will pay for digital content, and the great thing for the publishers is the low cost of distribution. Online marketers have done it for years using micro websites with targeted content and now apps. I don't see why a newspapers, etc. should be any different.

The way I see it is the newspaper and their website should be the teaser to the value added content. Right now it's like they tell the story and move on, then cry the blues, no one will pay us for our content. Now if they extended the content or partnered with someone (eg health or fitness) for value added content people would pay.

The newspapers, tv, etc, need to become the advertiser of the content, instead of depending on advertisers to support the media.

They have a reader base that many bloggers would love to have, but they need to rethink the connections they make with the reader.

Martin (Marty) Smith's comment, July 13, 2013 7:23 AM
Great analysis by Brian. I go even a step further in Saving The News&Observer http://sco.lt/4rBAOH and suggest that newspapers become part of their own rehabilitation by embracing the CROWD in real time by throwing off their "we are here to guide you" ethos. The editorial-centric model is over. Brian's idea about promotion-centric is a good one, but I want more. I want these organization deep in the weeds on things so WEB marketing they can't NOT understand how DIFFERENT life is and will always be from that magic time when a newspaper could take down a President, we could only watch 4 TV channels and exciting programming was a show about a boy named Beaver :). Why Engaging Online Content Is a Must for SEO

How your startup can benefit from high-quality website content, and why you might need to hire someone to oversee it for you.

Via Neil Ferree, Gerrit Bes, Martin (Marty) Smith
Neil Ferree's curator insight, June 14, 2013 8:38 PM

Key factors Google considers to be indicators of high quality:

  • Longer content
  • Images and video
  • Proper text formatting
  • Correct spelling and grammar
  • Outbound links to other high-quality sites
  • Inbound links and social shares from other high-quality sources

A proper content strategy requires a significant amount of time and talent. But as a time-crunched business owner, you might not have enough bandwidth to regularly generate and oversee the content creation for your website. If that's the case consider hiring a director of content who can create and publish white papers, newsletters blog posts or e-books for you.

Make sure your http://bit.ly/RichSnippet renders with the content you create publish and syndicate to your top socials.

6 Reasons Your Blog Content Won’t Go Viral

6 Reasons Your Blog Content Won’t Go Viral | Information Technology & Social Media News | Scoop.it

Here are 6 reasons your content won’t get shared (and it absolutely won’t go viral):

1) No Sharing Buttons (or they’re hidden)

In order to help your content spread, you have to reduce the friction of sharing. In other words, make it very easy to share via Facebook, LinkedIn Twitter, Pinterest and via email.

2) You Have a Boring Headline

Headlines are the first things people see when the visit your website or blog.

3) You’re Not Connected In Social Media and/or You Don’t Share it Yourself

If a tree falls in the forest but no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound? Translated into blogging, this is, “If a post is written but there’s no one around to read or share it, was it really written at all?”.

4) Your Posts Are All About You

I have nothing against you, your company, your products, the benefits of your products, the different colors you offer, your financing plans, your client case studies, your demos or your company events. It’s just that it’s not that interesting for me as a reader.

5) You Don’t Have an Artisanal Attitude to Crafting Content

Blog posts that are produced as “check the box” activities will never be exceptional. In other words, an inspired piece of content can get hundreds or thousands of shares while an uninspired one can get zero.

6) You Don’t Post Often Enough To Become Good At It

Every content creator starts off producing average (or below average) content. Get over that fact.

You have to produce enough content, get enough feedback, see what people respond to and find your own voice…and that requires that you put in some time.
