Wage gap could explain why women are more likely to be anxious and depressed than men

Wage gap could explain why women are more likely to be anxious and depressed than men | Kinsanity | Scoop.it
The odds of major depressive disorder and generalized anxiety disorder were markedly greater among women who earned less than their male counterparts, with whom they were matched on education and years of experience, according to new research conducted at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health. Results of the study are online in the journal Social Science & Medicine.

The odds that an American woman was diagnosed with depression in the past year are nearly twice that of men. However, this disparity looks very different when accounting for the wage gap: Among women whose income was lower than their male counterparts, the odds of major depression were nearly 2.5 times higher than men; but among women whose income equaled or exceeded their male counterparts, their odds of depression were no different than men.

Results were similar for generalized anxiety disorder. Overall,

Let's Talk About Sex and Depression

Let's Talk About Sex and Depression | Kinsanity | Scoop.it
Imagine for a moment that I took away your ability to enjoy sex. It’s just gone. Now in order to get it back, you would have to declare that you belong to two categories of people who are regularly stigmatized in pop culture. While you are dealing with this, you may also be experiencing feelings of worthlessness, guilt, hopelessness, lethargy, anxiety, and the inability to concentrate. If you can get past all that and reach out for help, there’s a big chance no one will do anything. They may not even believe you.

Welcome to the world of a woman dealing with the sexual side effects of depression and its treatment.

The Curious Effect of Depression on Intuitive Thinking Skills — PsyBlog

The Curious Effect of Depression on Intuitive Thinking Skills — PsyBlog | Kinsanity | Scoop.it
First experiment to find a link between depression and intuition.

Depression curbs people’s ability to make intuitive judgements, a new study finds for the first time.

The research may help explain why people who are depressed say they find it difficult to make ordinary, everyday decisions.

In the experiment, published in the British Journal of Clinical Psychology, half the participants had major depressive disorder, while the other were a healthy control group (Remmers et al., 2014).

Both groups were given a measure of intuitive thinking which involved finding the link between words.

Depression is like being in a silent limbo, we can't make any decisions to help us move forward from the melancholy that we feel. Depression weakens our creativity, and intuitive processing. Holistic therapies such as Flower essences due to their own energetic vibrational healing, Aromatherapy essential oils such as sage, orange, lemon or sandalwood. Hypnotherapy, Reiki, and, Acupuncture, and more can help us to find the path in our mind that leads us back to our creative center. We need to be able to listen to our own natural abilities to make decision

Invisible Walls: How to Set Boundaries After Abuse | Kinsanity | Scoop.it
When you’re depressed, anxious, abused, and/or have been isolated your whole life, it’s easy to feel like other people can’t really ever get close. Socializing is really hard for people who’ve had nothing but abuse. And we keep waiting for someone healthy to save us. But they can’t. So how can we fight this process and end the cycle? Well, there are three options that I’ve seen.

I Can’t Go Out, I’m Too Depressed; I Mean, I Have The Flu

I Can’t Go Out, I’m Too Depressed; I Mean, I Have The Flu | Kinsanity | Scoop.it

But here’s the thing, when someone calls and asks if I want to have coffee, saying I’m too depressed isn’t seen as acceptable. That’s seen as weakness. That’s seen as something wrong with me. Whereas, if I said I was sick with a cold, that would be alright, because, after all, everyone gets colds and when they get them, it’s okay not to feel like socializing.

A recent study by scientists at Imperial College London found that the psychedelic compound in shrooms, psilocybin, can help ease depression by reducing the activity of certain parts of the brain that are overactive in individuals with the illness.
