American Express - is it time to reinvent yet to become a digital payments player? Serious headwinds brace Amex even as it gears of bring $1 billion in expense reduction!
Amex will need to transform in becoming a digital nimble player to remain competitive with Visa/MasterCard and a number of unicorn start-up are widening the competitive leadership gap. Is Amex a good target to acquire? Who - Apple, Google with their payments agenda but does that give them scale (users and merchants)? Or will it be taken private restructured and then made public after the transformation? A great brand name that I will be watching closely!

Available today, American Express announced Serve Cash Back, a new prepaid debit Account option that will earn Accountholders 1% cash back on purchase

Amex prepaid debit option allows cardmembers to earn 1% cash back on gas, groceries and clothes with a fee of $5.95 per month. Amex looking at extending its Serve platform to drive more transactions and potentially acquire new ones.

Amex Express Checkout launches amid existing competitors including V.me, MasterCard, Google, Paypal, Apple Pay and soon to be added Android Pay + Samsung Pay! Is this move a tad late? Working with Stripe helps in presenting the solution to developers of retailers / merchants that engage Stripe based solutions and gateway offerings.

A very small segment of NFC payments, not sure if Amex will notice uptick in transactions through this payment partnership with Jawbone. This might fall under the same segment of Amex Twitter buy capabilities!. The louder play for Amex will likely evolve with onset of Apple Watch for paying with wearables with Apple Watch users likely being individuals with higher disposable income.
