Twitter Tips for Beginners: Everything I Wish I Knew When I Started

Twitter Tips for Beginners: Everything I Wish I Knew When I Started | Simply Social Media | Scoop.it

Before I joined Buffer, I barely had a Twitter account.

It existed by its lonesome for a few years as a placeholder for the day when my work allowed me to tweet freely. That day came when I had the privilege to join up with the Buffer team, and I dove right in, applying all the Twitter knowledge I had stowed away. And still, even with a running start, I had so much to learn.

Knowledge seldom takes the place of experience. So while I muddled through my first few weeks on Twitter—experimenting and fiddling—I noticed the many things I could have only learned by doing. Here are the big ones. Call them Twitter tips for beginners.

Maybe you can relate to some?...

Seven tips to help create awesome Vines | Econsultancy

Seven tips to help create awesome Vines | Econsultancy | Simply Social Media | Scoop.it

Data from Unruly shows that five Vine clips are shared every second on Twitter and branded Vines are four times more likely to be shared than branded online videos. It’s also interesting to note that weekends are the most popular time to share Vines and in most cases they are more popular than all the previous weekdays combined.

We’ve previously looked at fashion brands and football teams that have begun using Vine, as well as highlighting both good and bad uses of the platform. As with any new technology it’s good to keep experimenting and work out how it can benefit your brand, but there are a few guiding principles that it’s worth considering....

Five good and four bad examples of brands using Twitter | Econsultancy

Five good and four bad examples of brands using Twitter | Econsultancy | Simply Social Media | Scoop.it

Twitter is a brilliant tool for communicating with consumers and when used effectively can be a great way of building customer loyalty. In recent weeks I’ve come across a number of brands that have excellent Twitter strategies and several that I thought were less impressive. This could be because they were dull, unimaginative or simply weren’t living up to their potential. So to shine some light on the differences between those brands getting it right and those that perhaps aren’t, here are five good and four bad examples of brands using Twitter....

Calvin Romeo's curator insight, August 15, 2013 10:53 PM

Effective communication with consumers is an important and vital part for any business or entity to have a successful future. If this step handled with a lack of effort/poorly or if the consumer perceives that the brand is boring it could affect that particular brand being considered at all in the consumer’s decision making process. Also when it comes to the consumer's Psychological process the first part of this step is Motivation which is factors that would compel a consumer to take any particular action or not. This article shows a good variety of examples of business that have used the social media network 'Twitter' to engage with potential consumer and other that have not used it so well.

MARTIN LEE's comment, August 19, 2013 7:00 AM
Being effective and engaging is the goal of every communication. Twitter has emerged as the primary platform for organisations to communicate with their consumers. This article contrasts accounts that really know how to use Twitter to engage their customers, and accounts that don't really know what they're doing with Twitter, and look as though they are just following the trend without understanding it. The article was insightful in the way it portrayed "boring" and "unexciting" 'tweets' with accounts that are not heavily followed. Marketers attempt to engage consumers via different mediums such as verbal, graphic, musical, and animation channels which can all be accessed on Twitter.
Kier Segui's comment, August 20, 2013 3:02 AM
This article states examples of brands that are good at marketing through twitter and brands that are bad at marketing on twitter. Social media a an emerging and very powerful resource for communicating with consumers. Twitter is used by most brands to reply to their consumers questions and updating them on current happenings within the brand. However you must understand how to effectively use Twitter in order to make full use of its consumer reach potential. Tweets easily go viral and what is posted by brands on Twitter easily gets passed onto others. If a company were to get a negative response from one of its consumers than it could potentially damage the reputation of that brand. Engaging with consumers the correct way makes the process of marketing through social media much easier.

5 Ways Businesses Can Stop Being Boring on Twitter

5 Ways Businesses Can Stop Being Boring on Twitter | Simply Social Media | Scoop.it

At first tweet, Twitter can look like a jumble of irrelevant thoughts and an overwhelming flood of industry news. Businesses usually start using it by joining the crowd. They share content that can drive some traffic to their sites, but rarely maximize the potential of the micro-blogging platform.

A lot of companies tweet in something of a vacuum: they scramble to get an interesting link or promote a new blog post, share it on Twitter and call it a day. Sure, that’s tweeting. But it’s also really, really boring. To actually build a strong, active following on Twitter, you need to establish a unique voice among your industry peers, prospects and customers. In short – stop being boring. Here are five ways to do that...

Twitter Writes a New Guide for Small Businesses ... and It's Pretty Good : Small Business Search Marketing

Twitter Writes a New Guide for Small Businesses ... and It's Pretty Good : Small Business Search Marketing | Simply Social Media | Scoop.it

Small business owners that are looking to learn how to have a productive presence on Twitter could do a lot worse than to download and read a new guide that comes direct from the source.

Twitter published the 22-page PDF last week to coincide with the rollout of its small business ad products. It covers Twitter in three chapters, going back to scratch with the most basic info such as “anatomy of a Tweet” — a section that shows and explains hashtags, mentions, replies, retweets and other basics. There’s a tutorial on using Twitter search to find users that tweet about the keywords associated with your business, and a suggestion to search on your product or business name to see what’s been said about you.

But the guide goes beyond that level and actually offers some fairly nuanced tips for the small business crowd....
