Ruin Memories

Ruin Memories | Visiting The Past | Scoop.it

Modernity is rarely associated with ruins. In our everyday comprehension ruins rather bring to mind ancient and enchanted monumental structures; an archaeological dream world featuring celebrities such as Machu Picchu, Pompeii and Angkor Wat. Yet never have so many ruins been produced; so many things been victimized and made redundant, so many sites been abandoned. Closed shopping malls, abandoned military sites, industrial wastelands, derelict mining towns, empty apartment houses, withering capitalist and communist monuments. A ghostly world of decaying modern debris mostly left out of academic concerns and conventional histories - and also considered too recent, too grim and repulsive to be embraced as heritage. Though the situation of neglect may be claimed to have changed, as reflected in the growing field of the archaeology of the contemporary past, in the broader popular, artistic and scholarly interest in decay and ruination, and lately even in heritage discourses, modern ruins still play a very marginal role in the political economy of both the past and the present.

The Ancient China Sex Culture Museum

The Ancient China Sex Culture Museum | Visiting The Past | Scoop.it

The Ancient China Sex Culture Museum, at 1133 Wuding Road, Shanghai, is the only private museum of the kind in China. It has been a point of controversy ever since its establishment in September 1999. Some people are opposed to its exhibits, considering them distasteful and unhealthy, while others believe that they form part of ancient Chinese civilization, and reflect objectively humankind¡¯s attitude towards sex. For a time the museum seemed likely to close down, but as people are now more aware of the cultural value of ancient sexual practices, the museum has fortunately met with development opportunities, and a branch has opened in Zhejiang¡¯s Hangzhou.

Antiques as Souvenirs

Antiques as Souvenirs | Visiting The Past | Scoop.it

Tourists have collected travel kitsch since the Crusaders plundered their way through the Holy Land.  Postcards, pennants, shot glasses, spoons, as well as,  a plethora of other items have topped the list of must haves from exotic and pastoral locales. These items are readily available at estate sales as they lose their meaning once their purchaser has passed. I have a different take on souvenir purchases; I try to find an antique or vintage piece that I can use and enjoy in my home decor.

Tourist Trapped: Conservatory Of Flowers

Tourist Trapped: Conservatory Of Flowers | Visiting The Past | Scoop.it

Each room or “gallery” of the Conservatory has lots of nooks and crannies, benches and overhangs to play around. One can certainly spend an eternity gazing at the fascinating bouncing Nepenthes. Or one could pretend one was in a magical secret garden deep within the Amazon Rainforest on a fairy finding expedition. I did both.

Making our way to the opposite end of the Conservatory, Tighe and I found ourselves at the current special exhibit: Boomtown: Barbary Coast at the Conservatory of Flowers. As explained on the website, “Get ready to jump ship into San Francisco’s rowdy past as the Conservatory of Flowers presents an all new garden railway display celebrating San Francisco’s gold rush Boomtown days and its infamous Barbary Coast neighborhood.”

I know what you’re wondering. And yes, there is a little section devoted to prostitutes. The special exhibit gallery was filled with little model trains, model ships, and mini-earthquakes. Boomtown looks like a Mr. Roger’s Make Believe version of San Francisco, which is to say that it is awesome and fun and a little bizarre.

wanderingsalsero's curator insight, March 27, 2013 4:51 AM

I haven't read this article but I knew right away, when I saw the title, that it was a valuable subject.  I think that if more business people knew who much curation helps their 'don't have time' problem, they'd really be enthusiastic about it.

There's a tendancy, I believe, among business owners to think that people who read their blog, or website (or any other content) expect it to be Pulitzer Prize quality.  I don't think that's true at all.  Nor do customers expect a LOT of content.  They just want to know what the business owner thinks and (in many cases) what they're 'up to'.

Curation makes it so easy for business owners to give them that info.

wanderingsalsero's curator insight, April 6, 2013 7:43 PM

Add curation in with mobile video and travel blogging and I think you've got a winning combination.

When austerity goes too far... Talk about a true proposed sell-out! This would have been far worse than the use of a Beatles song in a commercial or something.
