The Geography of New Orleans

The Geography of New Orleans | Stage 4 Place and Liveability | Scoop.it
Geographers make a distinction between site and situation as they consider the underlying foundation of a place. Few cities represent such a wide chasm between these two aspects as does New Orleans. The situation, or the answer to why does a place exist, was imperative. The Mississippi River was a major artery for the North American continent. As first the Europeans and then the Americans assumed control of the area, a port was essential at the mouth of this river. But the site, the response to where a city is placed, continues to confound. Few environments were or are more inhospitable to human habitation. Poor soil, disease, floods, and hurricanes are constant threats that have plagued the city for over three centuries. But the why trumped the where and hence the paradox of New Orleans persists.
GTANSW & ACT's insight:

The reasons people live in some places is a product of economic, environmental and historic factors. New Orleans is a good example.

New Orleans is the classic example to use to explain the difference between site and situation...lousy site, incredible situation.  These maps are a nice introduction to the city.

This is a personal review of one Textbook for the Australian Curriculum Geography.

Geoworld 7 is published by Macmillan Education Australia and is on the shelves in most  states now. Other editions will be there very soon.

GTANSW & ACT's insight:

Looking for a textbook that gives you and your students choice and engaging studies ? Geoworld 7 was written to engage students and facilitate student centred learning.

The key concepts, cross curriculum priorities and skills  are integrated into double page spreads saving teachers time.

If finding that elusive material on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples to meet AC priorities has you frustrated the look no further - this book excels in this area.

The online teaching program suggests strategies for choosing content that suits you and your students and provides templates for group work.

Don't be overwhelmed by the volume of content because choice is good and brings the subject alive.

If you are looking for a text that just covers the curriculum content and decides everything you teach then this text might not be for you.

However if you want to challenge your students to think outside the square, learn about the world around them , make choices about the examples they use and work independently or in groups for a portion of their studies of Geography as well as incorportaing ICT  you really should give the Geoworld series a try.

Wolves, lynx and -30C temperatures they can handle, but now northern Norway’s indigenous people are up against government, industry, the military and even conservationists
GTANSW & ACT's insight:

This article looks at threats to the liveability in the arctic for indigenous peoples.

A variety of economic, social , cultural and environmental  facors influence perceptions of liveability for different people.

Examine the cultural connections the Inuit have to the extreme natural environment in Nunavut, Canada and compare to the sea gypsies living in the India and Pacific Oceans. Both groups face threats to the liveability of their cultural homelands.
